About this listen

Nestled in the lush, green Rhondda Valley of southern Wales lies the small mining village of Cymer. The life of a collier was arduous but it put food on the table and was an accepted way of life at the time. Toiling such long hours in often difficult situations was bad enough, so the addition of something sinister brought about great fear and apprehension for the men who worked in the deep depths of the earth.

The people in the village harboured many superstitions, and legends flowed freely around the fire on winter nights. Talk of night creatures and demons caused shadows from the fires to dance on walls creating an atmosphere of chilling fear as those listening conjured images of the most wicked and dangerous phantoms of all—vampires!

Nevertheless, the townspeople would put aside such tales once daylight struck and went about the business of living and surviving. That is, until a mysterious phenomenon began to happen where miners began to disappear without a trace or any reasonable explanation.

At age four, Rhys Cadogan excitedly crept downstairs hoping to play a trick on his beloved grandfather before the man left for his shift at the mine. However, what met the lad was something that looked like his granddad but was somehow frighteningly different. Red eyes glared at the boy and a pale, translucent hand beckoned the boy closer. It would be a different way of life for little Rhys from that moment forward, including horrific nightmares. He was saved by a local woman who mixed herbs and potions as health remedies. She saw the door was open to his home and when no one answered her inquires, Bedilia “Biddy” Leyshon, whose son had vanished not long before, went in search of the child, finding him shivering in a wardrobe.

In the English village of Sherborne where Rhys had been sent to live with his grandfather’s sister, Rhys grew to be a ruggedly handsome man but also a well-respected Detective Inspector in Her Majesty’s service. He was known for his fair play and solid integrity. However, the somewhat peaceful existence he led in the daylight was about to be stirred with evil once the curtain of night fell. Mysterious and horrific deaths began to occur during his watch.
After the disappearance of her son Simon, Biddy Leyshon also moved to Sherborne where she and Rhys would cross paths again. Little did he know that her herbs and potions had helped to keep his horrific nightmares from bringing back a memory both she and his aunt wished to keep from him.

When the woman he loves, who happens to be Biddy’s granddaughter, suddenly disappears, he is thrust into a supernatural world, which goes against everything he has ever believed. Reluctant to accept such magical rubbish, Rhys is forced to put his own logical thoughts aside and make a strange journey to his birthplace, Cymer, accompanied by Biddy Leyshon and his partner, Mick Forrester. What ensues is a fight for their lives against vampires as well as the bloodsuckers’ maker, an ancient beast more dangerous than any criminal Rhys has ever encountered.

Confronting magic, witchery, and forest beings all in the fight to rescue his beloved Catherine Ballentyne before the vampires kill her, or worse, turn her. Rational Rhys Cadogan must step back from himself and embrace the thought that there might truly be things on earth that cannot be explained. He will fight with all his might and accept whatever means necessary to win the fight against evil darkness... even magic to save his Catherine.
