About this listen

His home destroyed in the attack on Pearl Harbor, Murph Turner stumbles into the exotic town of Broome, hoping for safe harbor. Instead, the troubled teen discovers a wild and lawless place brimming with espionage, treachery, and romance.

An outsider in a bewildering land of red dust and paranoia, Murph is quickly taken under wing by Banjo, a cheeky aboriginal scamp with a passion for pyrotechnics, and Micki, a beautiful teenager on the run from authorities.

But even as the Japanese armada closes in on the northern coastline, the trio is suddenly thrust into a murderous adventure - all set against the backdrop of a true WW II tragedy so brutal that it was immediately covered up by the government.

Great read

This book was a fun and exciting read. I love the dynamic relationship between the protagonists. I found some of the action during the climax was a bit hard to follow, but it wasn't TOO difficult to keep up. The narration done by the author was alright, I had to slow it down a little to understand him, but that's probably more the fault of my American ears. Not sure if the sequel is in the works, but there definitely should be one!

Conquered Hatred

Wow, WW2 as told through the eyes of some very unique characters. A Hawaii boy who witnessed the horror of Pearl Harbor, a Japanese girl, and a 1/2 Japanese 1/2 Aboriginal boy.

The book covers a lot of racism and goes in circles there a bit. A little cliché but not terribly preachy. Recording quality is a bit tiny and echoy in places but is understandable.

All in all, great book!

Completely consuming

The story engulfed me completely. I spent a full work day immersed in this audio book. It isn’t a normal WWII story, the characters are well thought out and the way the story is told lets it play out in my mind like a film.

Enjoyable Historical Fiction!

Fantastic! Love hearing Dave read this! I don’t read historical fiction due to forced reading of it in my school days, but this is one I very much enjoyed! Cannot wait to read the sequel!

Absolutely amazing! Must read/listen!

I've followed Ann for years now and I absolutely love Dave. When I heard his book was finished and found it on here, I bought it and finished it in two days! I then spent another few days making my family listen to it as well and they loved it.

I just really enjoyed this book

The genre isn’t what I usually read but I would buy another book from this author. I really enjoyed the characters and the story.

Big fan of the author, buuut...

I really liked the way this story is framed to present old facts in a newer, more personal way. I think that is important for getting younger readers to really understand something like Japanese internment or systemic racism. I would've given it all 5 stars if it wasn't for the author's audio set up. It was so echo-y i had to turn my speed settings way down just to understand it. I've seen what Dave Reardon has to suffer through eating on YouTube. Sir, treat yourself. you deserve a better recording booth.
