Publisher's summary
A play-by-play of the political forces and media culture that vilified and ultimately brought down Hillary Clinton during her 2016 Presidential campaign. The Destruction of Hillary Clinton is an answer to the question many have been asking: how did an extraordinarily well-qualified, experienced, and admired candidate - whose victory would have been as historic as Barack Obama's - come to be seen as a tool of the establishment, a chronic liar, and a talentless politician?
In this masterful narrative of the 2016 campaign year and the events that led up to it, Susan Bordo unpacks the right's assault on Clinton and her reputation, the way the left provoked suspicion and indifference among the youth vote, and the media's unprecedented influence.
Urgent, insightful, and engrossing, The Destruction of Hillary Clinton is an essential guide to understanding the most controversial presidential election in American history.

Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

America is great for a reason. Built on principles of freedom, rugged individualism, and self-sufficiency, no country has ever accumulated more power and wealth, abused it less, or used that power more to advance the human condition. And yet, as America blossomed, left-wing radicalism and resentment festered beneath the surface, threatening to undermine democracy in the form of social justice warriors, the deep state, and compromised institutions like academia and the mainstream media.

Justice Anthony Kennedy slipped out of the Supreme Court building on June 27, 2018, and traveled incognito to the White House to inform President Donald Trump that he was retiring, setting in motion a political process that his successor, Brett Kavanaugh, would denounce three months later as a "national disgrace" and a "circus". Justice on Trial, the definitive insider's account of Kavanaugh's appointment to the Supreme Court, is based on extraordinary access to more than 100 key figures - including the president, justices, and senators - in that ferocious political drama.

It was a devastating triple punch. Capping their four-year campaign to destroy the Trump presidency, the media portrayed a Democratic victory as necessary and inevitable. Big Tech, wielding unprecedented powers, vaporized dissent and erased damning reports about the Biden family’s corruption. Rigged is the definitive account of the 2020 election. Based on Mollie Hemingway’s exclusive interviews with campaign officials, reporters, Supreme Court justices, and President Trump himself, it exposes the fraud and cynicism behind the Democrats’ historic power grab.

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

It was never supposed to be this close. And of course she was supposed to win. How Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election to Donald Trump is the tragic story of a sure thing gone off the rails. For every Comey revelation or hindsight acknowledgment about the electorate, no explanation of defeat can begin with anything other than the core problem of Hillary's campaign - the candidate herself.

In the year 2018, it seems as if women’s anger has suddenly erupted into the public conversation. But long before this, women’s anger was not only politically catalytic - but politically problematic. With eloquence and fervor, Rebecca tracks the history of female anger as political fuel - from suffragettes chaining themselves to the White House to office workers vacating their buildings after Clarence Thomas was confirmed to the Supreme Court. She deconstructs society’s (and the media’s) condemnation of female emotion (notably, rage) and the impact of resulting repercussions.

The election of Donald Trump in 2016, like most of his campaign, came as a shock to many Americans. How could a man so lacking in capacity, so void of any intellectual heft, become the president of the United States? How could a man with no detectable personal qualities outside of resentment and the will to dominate appeal to millions of Americans, enough so that he was able to win the highest office in the land? Story
According to the media, Donald Trump could never become president. Now many are on a mission to prove he shouldn't be president. The Trump administration and the press are at war - and as in any war, the first casualty has been truth. Bestselling author Howard Kurtz, host of Fox News's Media Buzz and former Washington Post columnist, offers a stunning exposé of how supposedly objective journalists, alarmed by Trump's success, have moved into the opposing camp.

Story
In May 1987, Colorado Senator Gary Hart seemed a lock for the party’s presidential nomination and led George H. W. Bush by double digits in the polls. Then, in one tumultuous week, rumors of marital infidelity and a newspaper’s stakeout of Hart’s home resulted in a media frenzy the likes of which had never been seen. Through the spellbindingly reported story of the senator’s fall from grace, Matt Bai, Yahoo News columnist and former chief political correspondent for The New York Times Magazine, reveals the Hart affair to be far more than one man’s tragedy.

Story
Whats a wingnut? A wingnut is someone on the far-right or far-left wing of the political spectrum professional partisans, unhinged activists, and paranoid conspiracy theorists. Barack Obama campaigned as an antidote to the politics of polarization, promising to transcend the old divides of left and right, black and white, red states and blue. But in the first year of his presidency, he is presiding over an eruption of hate and hyper-partisanship that threatens to mock the promise upon which he was elected.

Very well written
I really enjoyed this book, mostly from the view point from a woman almost my age. I have felt everyone of these situation that happened to Hillary in my adult business life. Women rights and equality is a fight we are still battling though it might have a different face and tactic even from those who believe they are progressive. We have to continue educating those individuals who do not understand, if by want or ignorance.

Well done and worth reading
If you could sum up The Destruction of Hillary Clinton in three words, what would they be?
Painful, Accurate, Timely
What other book might you compare The Destruction of Hillary Clinton to and why?
The Handmaid's Tale is a good comparable read because it is the future, past and present for many women living in the United States and the "destruction" that we saw has far reaching implications for those who don't fit into one societal norm of gendered behavior. .
Any additional comments?
This was a great listen, although very difficult to re-visit. I appreciated Bordo's careful analysis and Huber's mispronunciation of "Sarandon." It is not an easy book because it reaffirms that many of us do not have any hope and that in my lifetime, we will not see any progressive president elected by the US. I hope one day Sanders' supporters will try to understand that you cannot just promise free tuition and it will happen; that Sanders' invoked old leftists tactics to divide women from "real progressive issues" and to imply white women are the establishment (without recognizing that these women are also battered, killed, subjected to violence and harassment, and no recourse in the courts if raped. The book is sad and sobering and also terrifying.

Absolute MUST READ!
I don’t care if you identify with the right, left, center, or otherwise, this book addresses issues we should ALL be mindful of regarding the affects of disinformation, & the media’s influential role in the development of the public’s consciousness. The media’s role is a crucial, bipartisan issue demanding our attention & criticism; as Americans, we must stand up & demand reliable, accurate information from all of our media sources if we have any hope of stabilizing & uniting our nation.

Very biased but worth the read
The author chooses to conclude most things in the favor of Clinton.. ie the Paula Jones case never went to trial because it was baseless rather than reality of the case settling out of court to limit the damage on both Clintons. Bernie supporters imaginary rigging of the DNC to favor HRC. She forgets to mention the women who accused Trump were all found to be false allegations. She is very negative towards Trump in every way. Still it’s fun listening to this book knowing Mrs Clinton will never be President. Had to stop the Epilogue, entirely false and biased from the first sentence. I assume she doesn’t credit President Trump for his numerous accomplishments so I did not waste my time.

And then there was Hilary!
This was a clear and concise explanation of what happened, when it happened and why did it happen. We all expected a fair and untethered election....it was neither. It was an illegitimate election of a very poor businessman, but a conman, running for the highest office in the world with the help of Russia and our US Press and of course, the FBI (who refused to comment on the ongoing Russia investigation of the president but who did not mind commenting on the ongoing investigation of Hillary).
I never thought I would live to see the day when our Congress would let the Russians decide who would be our president. Yes, Hillary made a few mistakes....but the truth is stranger than fiction. If we survive this administration we can never let this happen again!
I wish Hillary had someone else read it to us, who anger was both a distraction and annoyance, although I can fully understand all of her emotions.

Excellent Analysis
This wonderful book fully explores the role of the media in creating, deploying and perpetuating a deeply skewed vision of Hillary Clinton, one which bore no relation to the actual Hillary Clinton. And it shows how that skewed vision cost us, the American people, a Presidency of warmth, strength and care.

Welcomed Analysis of the 2016 Election
Bordo lays out in convincing detail how the character assassination of Hillary Clinton, begun early in her career, was simply ramped up during her presidential candidacy by a number of forces, including Russian and FBI interference, the attacks on her by both the Left and Right, as well the unrelenting negative media coverage. The devastating result, we now know—besides the loss of the election by perhaps the most competent presidential candidate in history—led to the election of a wannabe autocrat and the weakening of our democracy.

Loaded with inaccuracies
Expressed the exact opposite of how the mainstream media covered the election. Hillary Clinton was not a very good candidate. The main stream media vilified Donald Trump at every turn.
This author did not capture that her trustworthy issues are real and well documented. Her state department made may mistakes in Benghazi and she lied about lied about it.
The author was right about one thing though. Hillary was unelectable for many reasons.
