Publisher's summary
After Art in the Blood and Unquiet Spirits, Holmes and Watson are back in the third of Bonnie MacBird’s critically acclaimed Sherlock Holmes Adventures, written in the tradition of Conan Doyle himself.
It’s 1890, and the newly famous Sherlock Holmes faces his worst adversary to date - a diabolical villain bent on destroying some of London’s most admired public figures in particularly gruesome ways. A further puzzle is that suicide closely attends each of the murders. As he tracks the killer through vast and seething London, Holmes finds himself battling both an envious Scotland Yard and a critical press as he follows a complex trail from performers to princes, anarchists to aesthetes. But when his brother, Mycroft, disappears, apparently the victim of murder, even those loyal to Holmes begin to wonder how close to the flames he has travelled. Has Sherlock Holmes himself made a deal with the devil?
Critic reviews
"One of the best Sherlock Holmes novels of recent memory, at least as entertaining as Anthony Horowitz’s The House of Silk.... MacBird’s artistry will keep readers eagerly turning the pages just to see how she orchestrates the big reveal." (Michael Dirda, Washington Post)
"Gets a definite recommendation from me. MacBird is sure-footed with atmosphere and voices, there’s lots of action and a solid mystery, but no shortage of real tenderness between Holmes and Watson, and the conclusion is as satisfying as anything Conan Doyle wrote. If you’re looking for a Sherlockian Christmas present for someone, introduce them to Bonnie MacBird’s series." (Sherlock Holmes Journal)
"An extraordinary mystery...worthy of Holmes and Watson’s adventures!" (Leslie S. Klinger)

Story
Kidnappers grabbed Jenna in broad daylight, right in front of her children and their horrified classmates. Her family was issued an insane ransom demand: $25 million in cash and jewels, payable by the end of the school day, otherwise they’ll never see her again. As Jenna’s mother scrambles to gather the money, detectives Mo Butler and George Ortega follow the trail of the kidnappers, which will lead them through a sordid landscape of jealous lovers, broken dreamers, and twisted schemers. But every second counts, and there’s one thing Jenna Wade doesn’t have: very much time.

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Unconvincing plot
Spoiler alert:
The plot was going well until it tried to insinuate Mycroft as the potential criminal behind the events. That might fool a first time Holmes reader, but I think most readers will already be up on their Sherlock to fall for such a suggestion. Absolutely did not work for me.

Spoiler: a not recognizable Watson and Mycroft
The story is OK entertainment - but the previous are much better. As other reviews have stated, the suspension of Mycroft does not fit with the Homes stories. Also Watson attacking Sherlock with morfin feels outrageous and I almost ended the story right there in misbelief.
Overall OK if you have nothing against mysterious plot cf. above or are addicted to Sherlock Holmes.
