About this listen

Book #4 in The Devil DeVere Series – Library Journal Best E-book Romance 2012

In this fourth installment of the award-winning Devil DeVere series, Diana has come to London as her goddaughter's chaperone. Wanting to avoid her erstwhile lover at all costs, she nevertheless has no choice but to appeal to DeVere for help when Vesta mysteriously disappears. Although once nearly consumed by her passion for DeVere, four years has reduced the former inferno to bitterness and ashes.

Ludovic's time abroad has only served to deepen his debauchery. He's become jaded, world-weary, and bored. He also recognizes with self-annoyance that the marks of his discontent have only increased upon a certain person's arrival in London. When Diana makes her appearance in his den of iniquity in all of her glorious self-righteous fury, he suddenly feels alive again.

"Damn you to hell, DeVere!" she cried, jerking out of his hold. "Yes, I want you now, but I would despise myself for it the moment we finished." "Why?" he asked, confounded. "Why? Because I once confused passion for deeper feeling. I won't make that mistake again." "But don't you remember how it was between us? I can bring you rapture. You know that. What harm is there?" She scoffed, "Surely the same words the serpent whispered to Eve."

While DeVere is once more hell-bent to have Diana back in his bed, she will do whatever it takes to bring him to his knees.

A Romance Listener's Must Have

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would recommend. But it would have to be to someone that loves romance and doesn't mind reading historicals. It's a book that you can go about your business and still get your book fix.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Devil's Match?

One of the most memorable moments for me was when Diana meets someone from DeVere's past. The woman reveals something to Diana that she can use in the hopes of getting DeVere's affection.

What does Eva Hathaway bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She has a way of bringing the author's characters to life. There were several different accents that you just don't hear when you read the book yourself. The only thing that might have made it perfect is if there were sound effects in the background.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't feel that this was a story that would make anyone cry. Depending on your sense of humor, there may be times where you will laugh. It shows how the author involves her readers.

Any additional comments?

This was a great follow-up to book 3 of the Devil DeVere series. Once you finish this book, then you'll have to make sure to get "A Devil's Touch". It's the only way to know what happens to the Devil and his angel.

A GEORGIAN ELEGANT DECADENT & TOUCHING LOVE STORY

This is the follow-on book to The Devil You Know about Diana and DeVere's tempestuous hot hot hot love affair - definately not a stand-alone listen.

In the first book I had every sympathy with DeVere as he was so painfully manipulated into the sad direction his life took. However, in the beginning of this second book, I didn't like the jaded, opium smoking, debauched rake he had become - that is until he meets Diana again and realises there's just no way of getting over her and we finally (and happily) see the ice around his heart slowly starts to melt.

The plot had lots of twists as the two embark in a battle of wits as the sexual fire they have for each other cannot be put out - but eventually Diana, who has learnt some new sexual massage tricks by an ex Harem woman, turns the tables on DeVere as she becomes the knowledgeable lover (....... or so she thinks). We learn that underneath all his bravado DeVere is just a hurt, misunderstood, passionate, damaged person who is so thoughtful and kind to the people he cares for and his heart is breaking for hers.

Worth a credit? A loveable cast of characters and clever writing makes this (and it's predecessor) an addictive listen that's short yes but it's filled with romantic, touching, passionate, hot hot hot hours and a worthy $10.46 listen (as so many of these short, often overlooked, stories are) but I wish VV had made these 2 books into 1 much longer listen.

WERE THERE NO !@#? EDITORS?????

This epilogue belongs to the next book since it gives away the entire story and goal of the story of the next book... or rather installment since it's sooooo short. If you don't intend to read the next then by all means finish this book. but if you do plan to read the next then perhaps wait, do NOT read/listen to the epilogue until AFTER finishing the next book.

I have to say that altho I have enjoyed each installment of this story, and will indeed go on to Simon and Salime's story when available,
I am utterly disgusted by the lack of editing and mixed up mess that's been made of a otherwise very enjoyable story. The inconsistencies in the order of the books, the order of characters appearances... while being gone in one book and alive again in the next (sorry, but no death in childbirth can later not have happened), and a cliffhanger of one book not addressed for three books... how much could a good editor really cost? It's as if a piece of the overall outline of the tale had been given to numerous authors and then published in whatever order they were completed with NO communication. It's that bad. No one author or editor could have made this much of a muddle of it.... I don't know how to untangle it for you since the bits that are in order would be disordered.... it's a muddle.

ABOUT THIS BOOK IT SELF!
It was very good. I totally enjoyed it! I had tears rolling down my cheeks at one point.... yes, all editor and order complaints aside I give it two thumbs up!

CREDIT WORTHY: pay for it, it costs less than a credit does.

HEAT FACTOR: Steamy YES! Implicitly emphatically irresistibly YES!

Surprisingly Good

Steamy, without lacking romance. It's almost perfect, but it's kind of corny. It's the perfect length for an afternoon read.

The Devil has met his match!

Would you listen to The Devil's Match again? Why?

Yes. I love this story! I listed to the story as I was working and it was quite pleasant. Easy to listen to and easy to follow!

What other book might you compare The Devil's Match to and why?

The Devil You Know. I'm currently listening to The Devil You know. I'm listening to them out of order (unintentionally). The Devil's Match is only the second book I've listended to. This is a new way of "reading" books for me.

What does Eva Hathaway bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Eva has a pleasant reading voice that I find soothing. Her accent adds a bit to the story as well. I like it!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have listended to it one sitting, however that is quite difficult for me because of real life obligations!

Any additional comments?

Here is my review of the story! This is one of my favorite series! I'm so excited that the series is continuing.

The Devil has met his match!

The Devil’s Match is the fourth installment of the Devil Devere Series by Victoria Vane. This one had me crying. Devil DeVere and Diana keep ending up at odds with each other and it just made me cry! They need and want each other so much and it just kept falling apart!

As the series has continued, the heat level has risen, until it’s pretty dang hot! The passion between Devil and Diana has grown until it’s scorching and I felt like I was going to combust just reading about their sexcapades! Of course, Diana can’t just give in to Devil, her honor won’t allow that. So, how does she give in to him while maintaining her honor? Why, a wager of course!

I thoroughly enjoyed Devil and Diana’s story. It was the most heart-wrenching and passion filled of all the DeVere stories. I came to love Devil for he has honor, but he doesn’t play by the rules set forth by anyone else. He takes care of his own while playing by his own rules. Diana is everything society expects her to be. Devil encourages her to give in to her passion and live her life they way she wants.

The question now is will Devil give in and follow society’s dictates or will he convince Diana to live the hedonistic lifestyle he embraces?

Victoria Vane’s characters embody everything that is right and wrong with proper society in the 1780’s. On the one hand we have honor and society’s expectations. On the other, we have the wants and desires of people. The two do not always meet in the middle. Finding a way to meet the needs of society and people is not always easy. It is a struggle and sacrifice to make it happen. Ms. Vane does an outstanding job of bringing the reader into the story and making them feel everything the characters are feeling. She also helps the reader understand restrictions placed on people as they move through society.

I’m also very pleased to find out the Devil DeVere series will continue for at least 2 more stories! I’m eagerly awaiting the next ones! Write faster Ms. Vane, write faster!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Yay for Happy Endings!

Loved getting to the HEA!

As much as I loved getting to the happy ending, I think I liked The Devil You Know just a little bit better. Perhaps it was the build up or the amount of interaction? I'm not sure. None the less, I quite enjoyed this book. Seeing Ludovic and Diana finally together and happy was very satisfying. The epilogue was the icing on the cake! I did want to smack Ludovic upside the head - more than once! He was beyond stubborn in some things! In the end, he came around so I am willing to forgive him. I wish we could have seen a bit more of Diana's internal thoughts that led to her actions. We got a glimpse, but I would have liked more. My biggest complaints - at times this sounded like an instruction manual and because I was listening to the audio and didn't have a print version to reference, I had a hard time keeping track of the timeline. I would like to see perhaps instead of the date alone perhaps a measure of time - a month, a year, etc. later. I think that would be helpful.

I listened to the audio of this book and enjoyed it. I wish the narrator, Eva Hathaway, put more emotion into her reading, but she has a nice voice to listen to. Her characterizations are not greatly distinguished, but are distinct enough that I wasn't confused.

I would like the thank the author for providing me with a copy of this audiobook to review.
