About this listen

It’s the summer of 1974 and 21-year-old Dawn Emerson has only three things she wants to do: compete one last time in the Ellensburg Rodeo, win back her ex-boyfriend Ryan, and become the best damn music journalist at Central Washington State College. But all her plans are left in the dust when she’s contacted by Creem magazine to go on the road with one of her favorite groups, the up-and-coming metal band Hybrid.

At first the assignment reads like a dream come true. Not only will Dawn land some much-needed credibility as a female music journalist, but she’ll finally get to experience life from the other side of the stage, and maybe crack the drunken, enigmatic code that is guitarist Sage Knightly. Instead, Dawn finds herself on an aging tour bus filled with egomaniacs; band politics; and a whole lot of sex, drugs, and rock 'n’ roll. When monsters start showing up in dressing rooms and some of Sage’s groupies become increasingly strange and dangerous, Dawn discovers the band is not only going places - they’re going straight to Hell.

And Dawn has a backstage pass.

Waiting 8 hours for something to happen

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. This synopsis read like a mix between Almost Famous with a little Stephen King thrown in. It was a long story about nothing. I listened to the entire book hoping something spooky would happen but the scary aspects are lukewarm at best.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I like the trip back to 1974 but the author spent way too much time with creating the past and developing Dawn's character. She never got away from those two topics for very long.

Which scene was your favorite?

Lake Shasta in the ending.

Did The Devil's Metal inspire you to do anything?

No

Any additional comments?

This would have been a really great read if the author had spent more time on the curse and allowed the demons to really get at the characters. Instead it was like she dipped her toe in the water and fell asleep. The narrator was great.

Devilish

An exact mix of Almost Famous and Drag Me into Hell. The writer makes everything feel very real.

fun

I enjoyed the front end of this story more than the back end but it was a new "retro" take on a thriller story - it was fun to jump into a rocker (are they or aren't they devil worshippers) story. just a good quick listen.
