About this listen

In this spellbinding sequel to the New York Times best seller The Last Magician, Esta and Harte set off on a cross-country chase through time to steal back the elemental stones they need to save the future of magic.

Hunt the Stones.

Beware the Thief.

Avenge the Past.

Esta’s parents were murdered. Her life was stolen. And everything she knew about magic was a lie. She thought the Book of Mysteries held the key to freeing the Mageus from the Order’s grasp, but the danger within its pages was greater than she ever imagined.

Now the Book’s furious power lives inside Harte. If he can’t control it, it will rip apart the world to get its revenge, and it will use Esta to do it.

To bind the power, Esta and Harte must track down four elemental stones scattered across the continent. But the world outside the city is like nothing they expected. There are Mageus beyond the Brink not willing to live in the shadows - and the Order isn’t alone in its mission to crush them.

In St. Louis, the extravagant World’s Fair hides the first stone, but an old enemy is out for revenge and a new enemy is emerging. And back in New York, Viola and Jianyu must defeat a traitor in a city on the verge of chaos.

As past and future collide, time is running out to rewrite history - even for a time-traveling thief.

Disappointing

I was expecting so much more from this book! The first book was AMAZING!! However, I had issues with the plot and characters. I get characters are supposed to grow, but they were all so annoying! Especially Esta and Hart! The story was all over the place and didn’t make much sense. Only the ending had potential. However, I don’t even really know how it ended. It was confusing and I was bored. However, I do want to figure out how Jack goes down! So l, I will read the next book. Yet, I won’t be using 1 of my precious credits for it.

mostly good

Story was compelling with interesting twists. It was not a book I couldn't put down but I did look forward to picking up again. There was one spot I could have done without but it was short and didn't feel like the author was trying to push an agenda. It didn't really fit and was not integral to the plot.
The narration is good, better than a few. Characters had different voices, and there weren't any that bothered me. The cadence did not get on my nerves like some.
I plan to continue the series and would look for other books by the author or narrator.

Stupendous

A wonderful marriage of history, mystery, and magic. The Devil's Thief stole my mind away to another time where my imagination took hold and I was enraptured by its beauty and complexity.

Great, Entertaining Listen!

I love the story continued from the previous book, and I really still love the narrator for this series. Entertaining and engaging!

Good Read

I have enjoyed the story so far. Sometimes the time travel gets a bit to much, I wish they would stay with one story line instead of bouncing back and forth. Still a good read

Esta

I hate her character. She’s so full of herself, yet critical of others with a similar mindset. She was a true continuation of her character from the first book, where she was made to stay in someone else’s home and subsequently stole his room and bed to “better” him merely because she’s a girl and he’s a boy.

The story gets better with every book

I find that the book becomes more intriguing and enjoyable the more I read. A lot of book 2 Takes Pl. at the worlds fair in 1904, and the description is rather fascinating. At the end of the audiobook, the author describes her research.

Two strikes...

I finished the first book, but didn't like it at all. With all the great reviews, especially for book two, I thought I'd give the series a second chance. I couldn't even finish it.

Not at all like the first book

The first book had a clear focus on Esta and her mission. This one lacked that focus and instead chose to jump from the viewpoint of one character to the next. I count about 12 different characters who are giving first person story contributions. It breaks up the story too much and really stops it from progressing. Especially since they are in different times, and it feels as though everything that is happening in the past is completely pointless since the future that Esta and Hart are in has already been shaped, and their experiences are, or should be, the main focus of the story. Why is the author telling us about a new character 2 years ago that can’t change Esta’s story? A setup for the next book maybe, but the longest most boring setup ever if that’s the case. The story moves so slowly from the constant jumping around from character to character that by the end I felt that nothing had happened at all, and I probably could have skipped this book altogether.

a shadow of the first

i struggled to finish. High hopes for starts, but it was over the place and so much awkward romantic tension throughout. What was once the strong prolific characters are now shells, struggling, hyper emotional, and barely in control of themselves. I won't ever turn anyone away from a book but this isn't one ill be recommending like i did so much with the first. dissapointed over all.
