About this listen

Lucas is a lost soul. His wife died in a terrible car accident while he was driving. Feeling responsible, he slips into a life of alcoholism and depression. He leaves his teen age son Joey with his brother, moves into a cheap run down apartment and spends his days fly fishing and his nights drinking himself into oblivion. After seeing a teenage boy gunned down in front of the apartment complex Lucas realizes he has to take control of his life, sober up, and return to Joey as a father once again. He embarks on a journey to the Diamond River in the high desert of Eastern Washington. While there he slowly begins his true purpose for coming to the desert. This book describes the modern day quest of the hero in his attempt to escape from a life of guilt and despair. After blaming himself for his wife's death in a car accident, he hides out on skid row. losing himself in an alcoholic haze until one day he decides to go down the river on a fishing trip. His journey to find perfection in fly fishing becomes the means for his spiritual quest to reach a place beyond his mundane problems and reach a place of peace where he can begin to live his life again. Good descriptive writing and well defined characters make this a good read. -Author Thomas Bauerle I really enjoyed this read. Steven B Howard writes with amazing power and gritty realism coupled with a lyrical mystical bent that kept dragging me along Lucas' grief stricken journey and redemption. Just wow!!! - Tim L.
