1936. Devastated by the death of her brother Hugh, Emma seeks to keep his memory alive by embracing his dreams of a communist revolution. But when she marries an ambitious diplomat, she must live within the confines of embassy life in Paris and Nazi Berlin.

1979. Emma's grandson, Phil, dreams of a tour of Europe, but is nowhere near being able to fund it. So when his beloved grandmother determines to make one last trip to the places she lived, and to try to solve a mystery that has haunted her since the war, he jumps at the chance to accompany her. Fantastic spy thriller

Another great Ridpath novel. This one is an exciting trip through the changing times leading to WWII in both Paris and Berlin. Ridpath’s ability to tell the story with vivid details makes you appreciate the complexities of the period with historical context. It switches between 1920’s and 1970’s with ease from characters you feel to you have gotten to know well. A suspenseful road trip of a young man and his granny sharing the story of her past was far from typical. Twists and surprises in every chapter make it an exciting thriller to the last page.
