About this listen

Rule #2 - There is no basement in the college library. If you see a door leading to the basement, inform a librarian immediately. (The entire library is strictly off limits during winter break.) ~*~ Ever since she was young, Kennedy Fisher has been obsessed with dragons. Now that she’s matured a little, she’s added Rex Draconis to her list of obsessions. Not that she needs more than two things on her list. I mean, a billionaire heir bad boy and dragons are probably more than enough to last her a lifetime, don’t you think? Anyways! Rex is nice enough, though she wouldn’t say he’s into her. Except then why did he join her paranormal mysteries club? And why does he give her an ancient book explaining some of Steamydale’s oldest small town secrets on Christmas Eve? One of those secrets leads to her breaking a very important rule, which also leads to the discovery that her list of obsessions may be shorter than she first thought. Dragon’s may actually exist! And one’s been hiding under her nose this entire time... Also, that point about Rex Draconis not being into her? Um, that may have been slightly wrong... Talk about obsessions! By the end of the night and into a hot and heavy Christmas morning, she’s going to find out just how wrong she was. If they survive a rule-breaking adventure in the university library, that is... Not a fan of the virtual narration

I tried. I really tried to not hate the virtual narration Even though there are some narrators that are so dreamy sounding that I could listen as they recited the value of pi for eternity. there were dropped sentences. The inflection, or lack thereof, really took away from the overall story. Had not been a very short story a Christmas Eve setting with this being a few days before Christmas as I read it, I would have stopped before the end of chapter 2. The storyline is basic and on the shallow side but I didn't expect much more. The virtual narration caused any potential positives to this supernatural story to be hard to locate. it was fairly anticlimatic. based on the summary I expected there to be a little more drama/danger in the library toward the end. Instead, it was just a confusing mesh up of poorly described characters interacting on Christmas Eve. Any of the potential cleverness was also completely diminished by the virtual narration.

Do not listen before bed

This was the first time I listed to a book read by a virtual voice so I was excited about that. However immediately for me I could hear the robotic twang underneath the reading. That wasn’t a huge issue, just something I noticed. But what did bother me was the intonations were off on a lot of it. It just was inappropriate a lot of the time because you’re thinking that would have been done better by someone who could relate to the story.

Now this was a space filler book for me. Something to listen too while I removed my make up, took a shower and got ready for bed. I liked that it was a short book. It was a basic book. So great for a space filler but not something I feel compelled or want to listen too again. There were definitely questionable moments for me in this book. Like the fmc dad spoke bad about the boy but was ok with his daughter marrying him a few hours later. The fmc also didn’t ask any questions and basically sold herself to see a dragon. He asked her to promise herself to him for eternity and explained nothing and she was just like ‘sure, have my virginity too while you’re at it cause you cute or whatever!’ Made me just want to throat punch her because you’re supposed to be smarter than that.

Basically this was not the book to listen to before bed because I was already tired and the little things irritated and led to a restless sleep because it left me asking questions.
