About this listen

Powerful inspiration for living completely and being happy, healthy and durable in an increasingly digital world. Captivating lessons featured in this gentle manifesto draw from the lives of fascinating people ranging from Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, to Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and biologist E. O. Wilson. The author's simple yet potent words, combined with engaging sounds and soothing music, will make you proud of all the powers you have that machines don't. Learn why being more durable will help you peacefully and successfully associate with technology, nature, and everything else. Parents who understand what it means to be durable will have the secret to unleashing their kids' unique talents and abilities so they'll grow up to be thoughtful, creative, durable contributors.

The Durable Human Manifesto on Audible is a family affair. Only a cup of coffee long, the book is narrated by the author, her son performs the original theme music, and her daughter curates captivating sounds from pond5 and freesfx.co.uk.

So, come on - get durable! You'll be glad you did.

The Durable Human Manifesto is 24 minutes of fresh air and peace. I feel Jenifer Joy Madden is sitting right across from me—perhaps at her favorite coffee shop. Kissed with sound effects, the audio book piques my senses (and attention) at prime moments. And these days, attention spans are so short: pretty picture, pithy title, popular hashtag. Sometimes, I find myself tangled in the World Wide Web for hours. Time wasted? Not necessarily—more like time out-of-tilt. Yet, I am not alone. Like many Millenials, it seems we are more attuned to Smart sounds than the beautiful birds. Our jobs rely on mastering technology, but this manifesto helps me regain balance. How so? Madden’s storytelling refreshes my roots—that is, the garden of my mind, where childhood novels blossomed on Microsoft Word. The quick-listen is a reminder that embracing and spending time with nature waters curiosity, relationships, and self-awareness. In fact, she illustrates how a marriage between self-awareness and technology is life-saving, especially for a young mother we meet in her book. Madden helps me understand how paying attention makes us more durable and better equipped to thrive in everyday life.

This book was a beneficial conversation starter for my 12 year old son and I to use about the healthy use of technology and ways technology is overused to the human species detriment. It provided insight and understanding and a perspective of how things were done in the past and why those way were healthy to our brains and bodies and how to integrate this new use of technology healthfully.

Where does The Durable Human Manifesto rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I rank The Durable Human Manifesto at the top of my list of non-fiction audiobooks. The author's enthusiasm and passion for the subject reeled me in within the first few minutes. The music and sound effects compliment the spoken word nicely. Somehow it sinks in better....hearing the babies laugh and the waves crash.

Any additional comments?

I did not realize just how much time I spend looking at my iPhone or iPad or PC until I listened to this book. The real-life examples brought it home. I make a concerted effort now to make sure I turn all devices off at least a couple hours each day to enjoy a book, walk with my dog or have an actual live telephone chat with a friend or family member. This quick 25-minute-listen is well worth your time. If someone in your life spends more time with their nose in a laptop, smartphone or tablet, while life is passing them by because they never disconnect, this is the book for them. Can't wait for the next installment!
