An unexpected encounter puts Dathan Herulus into a dilemma. When he and his men corner a beautiful Lithian woman in her home, thinking they can have their way with her, they discover that she is far from helpless. Realizing that she's extending a moment of mercy to him, Dathan reconsiders his intentions and lets her escape. That brief encounter begins a gradual change in his patriotic belief that his nation's cause is honorable.
This remarkable maiden is Brenna Velez. Later, she meets Garrick Ravenwood, a young Tamarian soldier.
