About this listen

Twenty-two-year-old Summer is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny, she’s stubborn, she’s clever, and she’s very opinionated on life as a millennial Muslim woman. The only problem is that she is dead.

When her younger sister, Sara, finds Summer’s lifeless body on their bathroom floor, Summer can only watch as a devastated Sara calls the rest of her family to announce her death. With no way back to her body and no idea how she died, Summer remains a helpless observer as members of her devoted, dysfunctional family come back home to bury her—and her secrets.

As Summer pieces together the events of the night before, she starts unravelling her whole life: the fabric of her British-Omani-Zanzibari family, the culture clashes, the depression that dogged her for years, and the childhood trauma that changed her forever….

Riveting and heart-breaking, Summer’s haunting story is one you will never forget.

From the outset this story unfolded in a way I didn’t expect and was therefore intrigued with where it was going. The story winds through cultures and countries with dexterity, charm, wit and sometimes a wicked little jab that reminds us this is no fairy tale. Instead it’s a fiction that takes place in the world we currently inhabit so we feel a familiarity while still recognizing we are looking at an altogether different perspective.
It’s fascinating, funny, informative and a bit painful.
This author has tapped into the behind the scenes experiences of cultures and races that are mixed and what that’s like in varying countries.
Also, listening to her is a real treat. Clearly she has a very nuanced est for language and a rather charming
English-y accent (is that a word?) 😉

Loved this book! It made me laugh and cry. Mostly I loved it because it shows the life of a young girl who was trying to bridge the gaps between cultures. A must read

What an incredible read. I devoured this. It’s so interesting and funny, yet heartbreaking and even though I’m culturally very different, there are so many overlaps. I truly loved this and would recommend it to any woman of any age.
