About this listen
After the death of her father and brothers in a Viking raid, Ran is alone. Alone and afraid. Travelling by sledge across a snowy headland to take part in the winter sacrifice, her future is uncertain. Her fate lies in the hands of Vigut, a cruel stranger who brings nothing but fear and death. Her life at the mercy of an evil magician. Her destiny in the love of a travelling musician. But where the journey ends is up to her....

"This is a great story told with warmth, against a hostile and frozen backdrop. Fast moving, it gives wonderful insight into life in Viking times. In sharing her thoughts with us, we can even begin to understand how Ran can gently accept some of the brutality inherent in the time; and her incredible energy and physical and inner strength, clearly indicate why Ran is a survivor. The story is beautifully read, and the characters' voices are clear and obvious, making it a pleasure to listen to. It is not a difficult story to read and students who may not enjoy reading, may benefit from following along with the hard copy. The cover of the audiobook is more appealing than the 1996 cover on the original book, but the story remains as interesting and adventurous as it was back then." ( Fiction Focus)
