About this listen
In a society where social credit scores dictate worth, the Newman family faces a waking nightmare when their low score lands them in a sixty-day house arrest. Trapped in their home, they're bombarded by an AI named Babble, through their government-controlled "smart devices," indoctrinating them with progressive values. As their resources dwindle, their struggle for survival takes a terrifying turn when they clash with the "Bulls of Bashan," a group of radicals intent on eliminating those deemed unsafe.
In The Fear Protocol, Brad Newbold crafts a gripping dystopian tale probing the consequences of an ideology equating beliefs with violence. With pulse-pounding suspense and timely social commentary, this novel challenges listeners to confront the dangers invading our world, and the erosion of truth in the pursuit of societal acceptance. Prepare for a riveting journey as the Newman family fights for their humanity against forces determined to erase it.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Story
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Story
Five years into a multi-decade deep space mission, a team of eight scientists—four women, four men—explore a dwarf planet near the Kuiper Belt, loading soil samples, rocks and artifacts onto their spaceship, Gretel. Inadvertently, they bring aboard a stowaway, an unseen entity which has grown exponentially in a very short time, and is trying desperately to escape from Cargo Hold 4. The ungodly howling, hammering and screeching coming from the hold on Gretel becomes unbearable, affecting the crew's sleep and work cycles, and threatens the integrity of the ship itself.

Story
Franc Sousa's life is virtually perfect. In a future San Francisco, where the most important determination of success is the quality of the computer chip inserted in your nervous system, Franc has the best. His chip provides him instant access to all the information and entertainment the world has ever produced, and to a virtual game environment that feels more real than his actual life. But when an accident dislodges his chip, he begins to question everything he's ever known. He can't accept the doctor's explanation that the beautiful girl he saw after his accident was only a hallucination.

Story
In a future where the Earth has been savaged by overpopulation and over-farming, robots are considered more valuable than humans, and sand must be altered to create artificially fertile soil. Ex-convict Knowle Noland, the hallucinating sea captain of the Trieste Star, finds himself wrapped up in a plot to incite a global war that will wipe out millions. War, it seems, is the only way to drastically reduce the population and create a better world for those who survive.

Dang! This is scary….and funny!
So I started listening to this and it seemed a little wild. But it was entertaining and the story was interesting and I persisted. At first I thought the narrator sounded a bit AI - ish but after I got into the story, it really worked. This story is written in a way that’s both horrific and humorous. The author has nailed the source of what’s wrong with America today. When you follow the story (and the American story) to the natural conclusions, the result is terrifying. It definitely gives you lots to think about. Read this book. It’s not a waste of your time.
