Publisher's summary

During the Great Depression, the U.S. government illegally deported more than a million Mexican-American citizens to make room on the welfare rolls and alleviate unemployment for white Americans. Carlos Moreno is a young man who has known only hardship and poverty, chasing rumors of work across Texas during the 1920s. Pursued by a renegade Texas ranger who thinks he holds the key to a secret, Carlos takes refuge in “Little Mexico,” Houston’s colorful, boisterous barrio. He picks the worst possible time to fall in love.

As the U.S. launches its repatriation campaign, the ranger joins forces with Immigration agents to step up his personal manhunt. Now Carlos and his wife will have to rely on their courage and ingenuity to avoid a dragnet that will ensnare an entire population.

Which Destiny will win?

This book seems to have been written about current events. Depending on which side of the aisle you sit on you may sympathize with Carlos, immigration, or the police.Corruption plays a big part in Carlos Moreno's destiny. Will he out run them or will his friends pay a price? Lots of intrigue and of course love and lust. Ben Collins does a great job Narrating this book.

Introduced me to an event I knew nothing about

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would listen to another. This overall event is new to me. We have much yet to learn, since it seems we are still doing many of these things, and still have the same awful, inappropriate opinion of Mexicans.

I liked the added paragraphs with true accounts of what happened during the Mexican repatriation. The ex-girlfriend added an odd twist to the story, but I imagine there would have been the odd lawman with a vendetta and skirting the edge of the law. The story overall is quite realistic, but the last portion gets into an unrealistic thread— a little more unrealistic than I’d prefer based on the underlying story. Regardless, I did still enjoy the story overall.

This is the second book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Ben Collins ) and I would listen to another. His style was good. Narration clear, male characters voices were good. His female voices varied however. Some were good, but some had such deep voices it was awkward. (One female character was described as having a deep voice, but I still found this too much).

There are no explicit sex scenes, or excessive violence or swearing.
