About this listen

Charlotte Drummond knows she has a duty to obey her father. Girls, especially well-bred upper-class ones, are expected to be submissive to the men in their lives.

But Charlotte's father is a cruel man, viciously beating her and her brothers for the slightest reason. He even wants to marry her off, at just sixteen years old; to a man she does not love. Lion-hearted Charlotte wants to defy him but to protect her brothers from his fury she agrees to become the wife of Brooke Armstrong.

Only when tragedy strikes will she will be able to admit that she loved him from the moment they met. But will it be too late?

standard Audrey Howard

Carole byd who reads this one is fabulous!!! The story itself is over long but I loved it...mostly because Boyd makes each character an individual voice and holds my attention as if it were a play at the West end in London.

Always give me an audiobook read by Carole Boyd

While I know nothing about Carole's acting career, I do know that she is a born audiobook narrator. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that she is the best British female audiobook narrator (I love Dame Judi Dench too but she is best at reading poetry). She has a voice pleasing to the ear, style of narration soothing to the heart and pace of narration that brings enjoyment. Give her any audiobooks, she will no doubt narrate them with equal charm. Give me any of her audiobooks, I will definitely have a good time listening.

Really good

Not a waste of money~ It may not be quite as good as "Long Way Home" but it's still awesome!

Started slow

Started a bit slow and I almost quit on it. I’m glad I kept on with it though. Not sure if I’ll ever listen to it again but it kept my interest once I got into it.
Narrator was very good.

SLOW AND OVER-ROMANTICIZED! HORRIBLE SEX-SCENES

This story is slow and very boring. There's nothing for the characters to overcome, just little problems here or there and never just one train of thought. There are also VERY dull and weird sex scenes. The author romanticizes domestic violence and rape. I am not anti-violence, or anti rape in stories, sometimes they work well, but the author writes Charlotte, the main character, oblivious to the fact that these things are going on and even accepting these things as her fault. It drove me crazy how stupid Charlotte was. This book was frustrating and slow. I had to put my iPod on 2x speed in order to get through it. I've read and listened to thousands of books and I recommend...DO NOT waste your money!
