About this listen

Rebecca Griffin has everything she could ever want - or so says her big-hearted, opinionated Italian-American family. But now her marriage is unraveling and her teenage daughter is hurtling toward self-destruction. While Rebecca struggles to hang onto her husband and save her daughter, she learns of the mysterious death of a young woman long ago at a local prison. As Rebecca's mother, Eva, reveals their family's connection to the girl, Rebecca is drawn into the story - it haunts her.

A search for answers takes Rebecca from her small idyllic New England town, to the congested streets of East Boston and the tight-knit Italian neighborhood where most of her family still resides. As she tries to dig up the facts of the young girl's life and violent death, the puzzle pieces in Rebecca's life begin to take shape and she faces the difficult truth about her husband, Drew.

Rebecca, her troubled daughter, Dana, and an enigmatic figure from the past, unknowingly embark on a collision course one desperate autumn night when the answers they seek come to light in the most forgotten of places from the most innocent of messengers.

Intriguing

*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review*

I really enjoyed this book for its layered story telling. You really feel all the things Rebecca feels - her despair with her eldest daughter running astray, the long estrangement unravelling of her marriage, the loving hub of her family.

I come from an Italian family and the scenes where Rebecca reminisces about her mother and her mother's family was nostalgic for me.

The mystery itself was intriguing.

The narrator also did an excellent job.

Overall, I really enjoyed listening to The Forgotten Roses and I would recommend it.

Bad-girl

Rebecca Griffin as the main character of this book has much to deal with, a rebellious daughter, an unfaithful husband and a traditional Italian family. The book weaves an interesting plot that changes everyones lives. I had a tough time getting into the listening to this audio book, but as the story evolved it became more of a page turner.

Good story

A valiant effort.
While I understand where our protagonist is coming from, I just felt that sometimes the metaphors came off as a bit pretentious. With a great story that didn't quite reach DNF territory, I did roll my eyes a few times.
Figuring it would be relatable as a wife and busy mother, we do wear many hats in our lifetime, though her choices--big or small--warrant more than her "turn the other cheek" attitude.
The meat of the story finally kicks in and makes up for her general flippant demeanor. I don't like this character. Nor do I like her daughter. Or her husband.
Okay. I guess the fact that I even have an opinion means I care a little.

Intriguing mystery of family secrets

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this book. The main character is a real estate agent and a there is a mystery surrounding one of her houses. She is a mom who is jumping through hoops trying to unsuccessfully make the family happy and keep them together. Her unsupportive husband has one foot out of the door of their marriage and her oldest daughter has some serious problems. The mystery was quite interesting and unexpectedly affected the family dynamics. I enjoyed seeing her growth as a person and watching her achieve the ability to let go..

The Forgotten Roses

The Forgotten Roses
: Deborah Doucette

A very tangled tale of family drama, unfaithful spouce, teenage rebellion and a mystery from the past. It took me two different tries to get through this novel. The overall plot is good but it felt like it dragged in places.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed by Mary Jane Conlon.

Good listen

I was surprised how deep a chord this struck in me. I don’t like a book with a lot of descriptive text but I stuck with this and I’m so very glad I did. I’m truly at a loss for words. This is one of the few books I may listen to again which is high praise. Thank you for sharing some sentiments that only someone in a similar situation could feel so accurately.
