About this listen

A companion book to The Chronicles of Prydain, this collection of short stories revisits beloved characters and reveals more about the history of the magical land of Prydain.

Here, listeners will find Dallben, destined to be an enchanter; Angharad, a princess of the House of Llyr; Kadwyr, the rascal crow; and Medwyn, the mystical protector of all animals. They'll learn the grim history of the sword of Dyrnwyn and even find out how Fflewddur Fflam came by his enchanted harp. How did Coll rescue Hen Wen when she disappeared at the hand of Arawn, Lord of the Land of Death? Find the answer to this question and many more in The Foundling: And Other Tales of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.

These stories do a good job of filling in some back story and teach good lessons about personal character, but it did not tell us about Gurgle.

A beautiful return to a masterpiece. I'm happy I listened to my gut. Words cannot overstate how well Lloyd Alexander is a master of wordcraft.

Wonderful quite simply. Delightful in every way that delightfulness is able to be measured or weighed.

Although I probably should have followed the implicit advice at the beginning of the book—to read it after finishing the series—I went ahead and read The Foundling hoping it might be a good prequel offering more context.
Having been exposed to The Book of Three many years ago, with it being read to me by my grandfather, I found it difficult to connect with. Without the context of the entire series, the characters and story structure felt repetitive. The short length made it challenging to form any deep connections, and the narration style seemed more suited for a younger audience. The nostalgia factor wasn’t a draw for me, but perhaps it would resonate more with younger readers or those more familiar with the series. That said, I’m hopeful that the rest of the series will provide the depth and connection I’m looking for.
