About this listen

Quick-witted and confident, Princess Laetitia of Avaritia always gets what she wants—until her 17th nameday ball. The King and Queen, believing marriage will rein in their daughter’s rebellious nature, surprise the Princess with not one, but four suitors: a philosopher, an astronomer, an artist and a necromancer. If Laetitia can’t learn at least one suitor’s craft and prove herself to be a worthy wife, she will lose her crown—the one thing she cares about most.

Laetitia irks her suitors as much as she can while learning as little as possible about them—and their so-called “crafts.” But when she and Sir Blaxton resurrect one of the many peasants who have died recently from an unprecedented disease, the corpse’s cryptic words about his death set them on a race to find answers: What is the disease? How is it spreading so quickly? And why is it affecting only the peasants?

As Laetitia tries to find answers, she uncovers a web of corruption with a stranglehold on her kingdom. Like it or not, she’s going to need the help of all four of her suitors—even if they end up putting their own lives on the line.

A Headstrong Monarch

Princess Laetitia starts off as a spoiled little brat who gives everyone the flux from servants to her tutors. Standing tradition says she must be married by her 17 birthday and learn a useful craft or forfeit the throne. The Princess is much too stubborn to be told what to do or who to be, so her parents set her up with four suitors. She must learn a craft in order to save her people as well as her throne.
There are a number of twists and turns that kept me on my toes listening when the book started to lull for a minute. I was just too intrigued listening to this solid medieval fantasy. The story is unique, adventurous, and action-packed. The characters are intense, well developed, but sometimes a little over dramatic. The storyline features betrayal, danger, vengeance, magic, and strength. The ending, I must admit, the author took a big risk with, but all in all, it fit her character.

Royal Intrigue and Unlikely Alliances

Princess Laetitia's tale in this medieval fantasy is a riveting journey of growth, intrigue, and unexpected alliances. Initially a headstrong and somewhat spoiled character, she faces the daunting task of learning a craft from one of her four diverse suitors to save her throne and her people. The story's captivating twists and richly drawn characters, including a philosopher, astronomer, artist, and necromancer, make for an enthralling listen. The plot weaves together elements of magic, betrayal and political intrigue. It kept me engaged through every chapter. I don't want to spoil anything but the ending is bold and fitting for Laetitia's character evolution. A well-crafted and adventurous narrative that's both action-packed and emotionally resonant. Highly recommended for fans of fantasy seeking a story with strong character development and a unique plot.
