Authenticity meets discipline.

Keeps it simple and keeps it pertinent. If I was to give direct feedback on the contents of the book, that is what I would say about the author. More importantly, he keeps it real. A heartfelt desk-top type of book all our college bound young adults need to read. If you already knocked out college, then read it for the sake of knowing what good habits are. The perfect mix of authenticity and discipline! A great gift for high school graduates and as a stocking stuffer!

Practical advice for improving efficiency

I enjoyed this and even laughed a bit while listening to this book. I remember not grasping the full significance of the Class Syllabus until after my first quarter of college (I learned the hard way) and wish I'd had that piece of advice and others from the book at the beginning of that journey. The author's Twelve are a very practical set of tools/strategies that will help college students improve their efficiency and maximize their learning during those first years of post secondary learning, where the decreased structure and guidance as compared to high school often leave some students floundering to find their way. Moreover, the author stresses the importance of balance and self care in creating the kind of mind, body, and environment that is most suitable for learning. While I don't think there are ever enough hours of the day to get everything done and remember first feeling that way as I made the transition to college, I do think having learned, understood, and implemented the Twelve at the start of college would have helped me prioritize my time, information, and self care in a way that would have improved productivity without sacrificing sanity. Many of those strategies are applicable even outside of the educational environment. Even as a person nearing her fifties and comfortable in her career, I picked up a thing or two I am implementing in my daily living. The biggest reason I was interested in this book is because I have a son who is a junior in high school. Although the boy is absolutely brilliant (I may be biased), I know this transition to college will be difficult for him. And, in this book, I have found excellent advice to help him better prepare for and get the most out of his first few years of college. Thank you!

Self-help manual for academic success

The perfect gift for the graduating high school senior to get them prepared for navigating college life. As someone who struggled finding my way my first year in college, a book like this would have greatly assisted me overcoming the feelings of being lost and overwhelmed in a new learning system such as a four year university. Mr. Rodriguez provides a strong foundation to the student, outlined in a step by step process that sets the student up for success. The tips and tools that are provided throughout the book cover various topics, both academically and personally, with the focus on building a strong foundation, refining strategies, solid habits, time management, compartmentalizing daily life, and treating higher education as a dress rehearsal to a full time paid career. This book also touches on the importance of cultivating interpersonal relationships, finding a school-life balance along with many other overlooked skills that will enrich the student’s overall learning experience. Mr. Rodriguez writes from the perspective of a mentor, or close friend, relating to the reader through his own personal experiences and best practices. Even if you are not attending school, many of these same twelve principles or core concepts can be applied to maximize life experience in the workplace or any new skill you wish to learn. As Mr. Rodriguez eloquently stated “knowledge is a powerful tool”, this book is a must to have in your reading collection.

The resource I wish I had

How I wish someone had sat me down prior to starting my freshman year of university studies and gave me an understanding of what to expect as well as a handful of tips to help pave a path for success. This book does just that, in a concise yet illustrative fashion. The author gathers not only from his own experiences, but also draws on reflections and observations from his career in the academic sector. The advice is prudent with lessons on topics such as productivity, the importance of forming habits and the value of journaling. While the book is clearly written with a specific audience in mind, its words of wisdom are applicable to anyone seeking to better themselves.
