About this listen
"Charming, warm and uplifting...there is so much to love about this book." (Laurie Frankel, New York Times bestselling author of This is How It Always Is)
A triumphant and touching debut about the unlikeliest superstar you’ll ever meet.
Twelve-year-old Norman Foreman and his best friend, Jax, are a legendary comedic duo in waiting, with a plan to take their act all the way to the Edinburgh Fringe. But when Jax dies, Norman decides the only fitting tribute is to perform at the festival himself. The problem is, Norman’s not the funny one. Jax was.
There’s also another, far more colossal objective on Norman’s new plan that his single mom, Sadie, wasn’t ready for: he wants to find the father he’s never known. Determined to put a smile back on her boy’s face, Sadie resolves to face up to her own messy past, get Norman to the Fringe and help track down a man whose identity is a mystery, even to her.
Julietta Henderson’s delightfully funny and tender debut takes us on a road trip with a mother and son who will live in the reader’s heart for a long time to come, and teaches us that - no matter the odds - we must always reach for the stars.

Story
In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn’t correct them. Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy’s childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the "yips": he can’t throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can’t figure out why.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Story
A whimsical, moving novel about a retirement home for literary legends who spar, conjure up new stories, and almost magically change the lives of the people around them. Alfonse Carducci was a literary giant who lived his life to excess - lovers, alcohol, parties, and literary rivalries. But now he's come to the Bar Harbor Home for the Elderly to spend the remainder of his days among kindred spirits: the publishing industry's nearly gone but never forgotten greats. Only now, at the end of his life, does he comprehend the price of appeasing every desire.

Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. After eight years together, Lil Bailey thought she’d already found ‘the one’ - that is, until he dumped her for a blonde 20-something colleague. For Sam Lovell, organising the summer festival in her hometown is one of the highlights of her year. It’s not always smooth sailing, but she loves to see Porthmellow’s harbour packed with happy visitors and being on the committee has provided a much-needed distraction from the drama in her family life (and the distinct lack of it in her love life). When their star guest pulls out with only a few weeks to go, everyone’s delighted when a London chef who grew up locally steps in at the last minute.

Stewart Gilmour is back in Stonemouth. After five years in exile his presence is required at the funeral of patriarch Joe Murston, and even though the last time Stu saw the Murstons he was running for his life, staying away might be even more dangerous than turning up. An estuary town north of Aberdeen, Stonemouth, with its five mile beach, can be beautiful on a sunny day. On a bleak one it can seem to offer little more than seafog, gangsters, cheap drugs and a suspension bridge irresistible to suicides.

This was a phenomenally told story and listening to it is the only way to enjoy it because without the proper accents I am not sure my own reading would have done it justice. You will laugh, you will cry, and you most definitely will not regret listening to this amazing story. Could not stop listening and have recommended it to everyone I know. Excellent excellent story and superb performance!

A uplifitng parents and child perspective
Amazing story and beautifully told from the perspectives of a mother and son on their journey. It reaffirms, me as a father that I have a tremendous impact on my children’s lives and overall self-worth. Even at my personal lows, I am still their dad, and they look up to me without judgement and prejudice and love me for what I am able to provide. I hope they know how much I love them.

Heartwarming book on grief
The world needs more uplifting books on grief. It’s messy and heartbreaking and grief never goes away. But if you take grief out to lunch, you can find a way to live with it and allow it to help you not hold you back. This story illustrates that.

Just wonderful
I laughed and I cried. Laughed out loud, Cried into my swimming goggles - I listen while swimming laps. One of my absolute favourite listens.

I'd go hear Norman in any comedy club
This is the feel-good book of the decade! Norman is a delight, Sadie has the fear of every mother and they're both "adopted" by a delightful elderly man who becomes their fairy-god father. And, Katherine Parkinson is a perfect narrator! Oh, and Jax will really never be gone.

What a ride!
I’m so glad we got to tag along with Sadie, Leonard, and Norman on their adventure. I was sad to see it end and wish I could spend more time with them. The story is well-paced and balanced. A joy of a read.

Warmth and heartbreak with a light
I loved everything about the organic connection of the characters and the way even the saddest things can also be light
