Um I really wanted to like this book. And I didn’t hate it, I still think it’s better than when the moon hatched… That being said, I have a few things that may help for future books. The editing was not done very well. Since AI read this, AI just read what was written so I could hear a few grammar mess ups which is totally fine but definitely get a different person to do some editing so they look at it with fresh eyes. Example- “breathe” and “breath” were mixed up, “swum” vs “swam”,… I didn’t like that the main characters name is Jackie… very plain and doesn’t match the overall vibe of the book. Along with some other names- Victoria, RICHARD?????, and Belinda for the dragons’ name? I mean, that’s just taken from wizard of oz. Also I had no idea what the age of Jackie was. At first, I’m thinking she must be quite young, like maybe 10 years old because of her dialog. Then at one point, an old woman called her “little girl” so I’m thinking she’s definitely like 10 but then all of a sudden there is a love interest? And there’s still no other inclination of her age until more than halfway through the book only to find out she’s 15... cringe. Leave it to a male author to write about a young girl. The dialog between the dragon and Jackie was confusing at first. It’s not said in any detail that they speak in each other’s minds so we’re kind of supposed to guess at that but the main character also doesn’t seem surprised or startled by this either. The dialog is also strange. The author uses nicknames like “girlfriend” when the main character is taking to her dragon, she also calls her “honey” and other things which just seems a bit strange to me. That is still a dragon, and should come off as a mighty beast, not a pet. Jackie also picks up and cuddles the dragon after knowing the dragon for 3 days. I wish, at the very least, the dragon had some sassy come back about these things and to not just go along with it like it’s normal. I also don’t love the fact that dragons don’t typically breathe fire but Jackie’s does. The way that it’s explained, comes off like the author invented the notion that dragons breathe fire.
The chapters are quite long and seem to end and start very randomly. One chapter begins with “After this,” so that should’ve been just another paragraph. The slang used is slang we would use in the 21st century but not in medieval times like this is claiming to take place. For example, “thumbs up” is used but a quick google search will tell you that wasn’t invested until 1910. One character uses the word “y’all”, again, a quick google search will tell you that wasn’t invented until the early 1800s.
Clearly, no research was done, hardly any editing, and the plot flopped again and again. I tried really REALLY hard to finish this book but I could not.
I understand small authors but there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of effort put into this book so I won’t be reading any of his other ones either…
