About this listen
Mikael Blomkvist is contacted by renowned scientist Professor Balder. Fearing for his life, but more concerned for his son's well-being, Balder wants Millennium to publish his story.
More interesting to Blomkvist than Balder's advances in Artificial Intelligence, is his connection with a certain female superhacker.
It seems that Lisbeth Salander, like Balder, is a target of ruthless cyber gangsters that will soon bring terror to the streets of Stockholm, the Millennium team, and Blomkvist and Salander themselves.

Story
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

The performance could be improved with woman voices
I felt the story a bit predictable. The performance could be improved with women voices. When a description of beautiful woman character that speaks with a masculine Foreign accent voice; it made me to forget that beautiful description. :(

waiting for book number 5
although it is the 4th book in the serie , still has its charm ,pace and intensity. begins a little slow but when you get into it (and remember all the funny swedish names ), the story catches you in its web and you finish it with the slight dissapointment and curiosity as you can't percede immediately to the next book

The Ghost of Stieg
Would you try another book from David Lagercrantz and George Goulding - translator and/or Saul Reichlin?
Hoorah for Saul!!
Any additional comments?
I think the author tried real hard, maybe that was the problem. It was quite entertaining in parts but mostly contrived and predictable.....still I listened to it all, I'm not going to return it, so I guess it took care of 16 hrs of my life.
[Is the wife gonna finish Stieg's version]???

While it lacks the extreme darkness of the Larsen books, this has quite good pace and I thought read more like a ripping yarn. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Not Stieg Larsson but not bad!
Overall I really liked the book! Well once I got over Reichlin pronouncing Sal-an-Dar as Sa-lan-dar.
There were shades of Larsson’s footprints scattered throughout the book and yes better had they not been of the fading ephemeral type, but at least they were there in the writing of Lagercrantz.
I much prefer Simon Vance’s reading of the first 3 books, doesn’t mean Reichlin was terrible, just not Vance!
One bit of criticism I have to add is that there was a significant lack of the energy and play offs generated from Lisbeth and Mikael....the underlying sense one got from having them together in the same book and their almost “real life” presence Larsson birthed them with in his former books. It was somewhat there but the chemistry from the written word rather than on screen I just didn’t feel!
Nonetheless the book is well worth it and I’m looking forward to seeing the movie. I wanted to listen to the book first before seeing movie so I had an idea what to expect.
I’m now ready for that.
In the Russian/Chinese/USA/Facebook/Twitter days of hackers not so anonymous it gives one pause to wonder just how much we the people don’t know!

Big shoes to fill
Any additional comments?
Lagercrantz did a good job overall. The story was complex and for the most part engaging. The character of Blomkvist was just right in some places and not quite there in others, particularly well drawn in the early chapters and not so well in the middle. Lisbeth was her fiery self, but the superhero portrayal was a little over done for me.
The rating of three for story is perhaps a little harsh, but there were a few times when the seams showed, and it felt a little rushed. However overall I was happy to be with these characters again, and I would welcome another book in the series.

Good! Very entertaining.
I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook! I also liked the plot, although I'm not sure if Larssons original characters would have acted the same way in certain situations. The reader was great, even though I prefer Simon Vance.
