About this listen

This is one chapter (Matthew's Gospel, Book 40) from The Family Bible Commentary, Volume IV by Rev. Dr. Adam C. Koontz.
------
“The teaching of the Lord falls into five clear discourses marked off by Matthew’s repetition of “after Jesus finished these words,” (7:28, 11:1, 13:53, 19:1) with the final discourse ending, “after Jesus finished all these words” (26:1). Before, between, and after the teaching are the mighty wonders of the Lord’s life, death, and resurrection predicted by the teaching of the Lord in the Old Testament. In all things, the Word of God proves true, and though all else passes away, His Word does and shall not. Matthew’s clear arrangement has caused little significant disagreement among Bible readers and teachers about the structure of his gospel, the five discourses being nestled inside the overarching story of the Kingdom’s drawing near and coming in the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus. A simple outline of these narratives and discourses is:

  1. THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN NOW NEAR IN CHRIST (1:1-2:23)
  2. THE BEGINNING OF THE CHRIST’S MINISTRY (3:1-7:29)
    1. First Narrative: The Baptist, the Christ, and the Kingdom (3:1-4:25)
    2. First Discourse: The Sermon on the Mount (5:1-7:29)
  3. THE EXTENSION OF HIS MINISTRY THROUGH THE TWELVE (8:1[…]
    1. “Second Narrative: Wonders and Callings (8:1-9:34)
    2. Second Discourse: The Missionary Discourse (9:35-11:1)
  4. OPPOSITION TO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN NOW NEAR (11:2-13:52)
    1. Third Narrative: The Kingdom Surrounded by Controversy (11:2-12:50)
    2. Third Discourse: Parables of the Kingdom (13:1-52)
  5. OPPOSITION GROWS, LIFE IN CHRIST EXPOUNDED (13:53-19:1)
    1. Fourth Narrative: Who do Men say that He Is? (13:53-17:27)
    2. Fourth Discourse: The Church Discourse (18:1-19:1)
  6. OPPOSITION MADE PLAIN, THE ONCE AND FUTURE KINGDOM IN CHRIST MADE PLAIN (19:2-26:2)
    1. Fifth Narrative: The King of Israel comes to Israel’s Throne (19:2-23:39)
    2. Fifth Discourse: The Olivet Discourse (24:1-26:2)
  7. THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN NOW COME IN CHRIST’S DEATH AND RESURRECTION (26:3-28:20)
