About this listen
New Saucerian Press is pleased to present The Great Phonograph in the Sky, a collection of magazine articles by John A. Keel, the man many consider to have been not only the premiere investigator of all things unusual and Fortean, but who was also our own 20th-century “Mark Twain”.
Many of the articles in this anthology and its companion volumes, Flying Saucer to the Center of Your Mind, The Outer Limits of the Twilight Zone, and Searching for the String, were revolutionary and explored ideas popularized in Keel’s classic books. Written in Keel’s engaging trademark style, they are sure to delight fans with their fresh, unparalleled insights into the nature of reality.
In this audiobook, John Keel displays the keen observational skills and investigative tenacity that made him the enfant terrible of ufology for decades. In this no-holds-barred analysis - much of it written decades ago - Keel shreds many of the sacred-cow beliefs still held in ufological and “cryptozoological” circles today and presents theories so radical that they are only now becoming accepted: the “4-D” or “interdimensional” thesis; the “breakaway civilization” theory; the possible role of “ancient aliens” in human history; the synthetic and/or hallucinatory nature of many “alien abduction” and “Men in Black” encounters; the role of spy agencies in paranormal research; and the alarming connection between UFOs, animal mutilations, and attacks on unsuspecting humans.
The Great Phonograph in the Sky covers a wide variety of topics, such as Eastern magic, statistical problems in UFO research, creature sightings, Earth mysteries, psychological warfare, skyquakes, poltergeists, radio anomalies, and phantom ships, planes, submarines, and humans. This special edition features several interviews with Keel that, along with his writings, showcase his wit, affable charm, and impassioned intellectual capabilities.

Story
In Dimensions, Dr. Jacques Vallee reexamines the historical record that led to the modern UFO phenomenon and to the belief in alien contact. He then tackles the enigma of abduction reports, which come from various times and various countries, as well as the psychic and spiritual components of the contact experience. In the last portion of the book, he notes the factors that inhibit research into the phenomenon - the triple coverup and political motivations - and concludes that the extraterrestrial theory is simply not strange enough to explain the facts.

Story
Using a wide array of evidence, coming from several different angles, Keel deftly explains why the winged, birdlike "ancient aliens" are bent on controlling the human race and how they do it. Surprisingly, Keel's research into Mothman could play a key role in deciphering the mystery of ancient aliens - whether or not the human race was actually created, genetically, by giant birdmen mating with earth women, and whether or not there was once a worldwide religion that worshiped Mothman-like gods.

Story
During 1966 and 1967, when he was subject to nonstop surveillance and harassment from both human and supernatural spooks, intrepid Fortean investigator John A. Keel made extensive field notes concerning the phenomena he was confronting in West Virginia and New York: UFOs, Men in Black, creature entities, ultraterrestrials, and odd coincidences and synchronicities. The result was a series of concise, thematically related reports, many of which were incorporated into magazine articles for Saga, Fate, and Flying Saucer Review.

Many of the articles in The Book of Mothman were written years before Keel’s Mothman Prophecies, while others were written years afterwards, making it a very unique and valuable source. With the addition of several 1990s lectures and an interview from 2003 - Keel’s last on Mothman - researchers and enthusiasts gain a better sense of just what was going on in West Virginia and the Ohio Valley in the 1960s and ‘70s.

Operating out of a secluded office deep in the hills of his home state of West Virginia, the prolific Barker single-handedly kept public interest focused on UFOs during it leanest years, and introduced many themes still discussed and investigated by today’s paranormal and conspiracy researchers:the “interdimensional” theory of UFOs; the shapeshifting nature of creature entities such as Mothman, the Flatwoods Monster, and Bigfoot; the cryptic terror of the Men in Black; and the mystery of the Philadelphia Experiment.

Story
Is there a single intelligent force behind all religious, occult, and UFO phenomena? Strange manifestations have haunted humans since prehistoric times. Beams of light, voices from the heavens, the "little people", gods and devils, ghosts and monsters, and UFOs have all had a prominent place in our history and legends. In this dark work, John Keel explores these phenomena, and in doing so reveals the shocking truth about our present position and future destiny in the cosmic scheme of things.

Story
This story of a real-life Indiana Jones of the 1950s named John Keel contains everything but a trip to Venus in a flying saucer - a subject our newsman/explorer would become famous for a decade later. In Egypt, the fearless Keel was cursed by a mummy and befriended members of a strange snake-charming cult. In Iraq, he played Russian roulette with a notorious desert bandit and lived among the Yezidi devil-worshippers. Later, in India, he was buried alive and discovered the secret of the Indian rope trick, which he then performed for incredulous reporters in New Delhi.

Artificial Narrator
I am certain this book is read by one of those text to voice AIs that has been trained on other books read by this narrator.
There are several strange vocal artifacts throughout the book that mirror the type of artifacts that those AI systems tend to create, and the narration is stilted and not quite right in a way not heard in other texts read by this narrator.
I'm not inherently opposed to AI narrated audiobooks, but the tech isn't quite there yet and I find it very distracting. Also I feel it's dishonest that they aren't telling the truth about the narrator.

Great Narrator - He's Very Real, Aces Keel
This is probably the weirdest of all the John Keel titles. I'm glad Pete Ferrand narrated it. He puts a lot of urgency in his delivery, which is reminiscent of old newscasts. It is exactly the voice needed for John Keel's incredible observations. I play these books all the time. Ferrand, Hacker and the mystical Lomakayu are all perfect narrators for the inimitable tales from Keel. I hope New Saucerian puts out more great titles utilizing the talents of these earnest voice artists. Viva Keel!
