About this listen

Vina Apsara, a famous and much-loved singer, is caught up in a devastating earthquake and never seen again by human eyes. This is her story and that of Ormus Cama, the lover who finds, loses, seeks, and again find her, over and over, throughout his own extraordinary life in music. Their epic romance is narrated by Ormus' childhood friend and Vina's sometime lover, the photographer Rai. Around these 3 the uncertain world itself is beginning to tremble and break: cracks and tears have begun to appear in the fabric of the real. The Ground Beneath Her Feet is Salman Rushdie's boldest imaginative act, a vision of our shaken, mutating times, and a brilliant remaking of the Orpheus myth. Rushdie is also the author of Midnight's Children and The Satanic Verses.Don't miss Salman Rushdie and Nicole Krauss at The New Yorker Festival.©1999 Salman Rushdie (P)1999 NewStar Media Inc. Critic reviews

"No novelist currently writing in English does so with more energy, intelligence and allusiveness than Rushdie. Nearly every page of The Ground Beneath Her Feet offers something to arrest a devoted reader's attention: puns and wordplays galore . . . and enough literary echoes—of Joyce, Yeats, Frost, Dante, oh hell, of nearly everybody—to keep graduate students on the prowl through these pages for years." (Paul Gray, Time)
"Lusty, sprawling, acid-high. With it, Rushdie enters a new rawness, a different madhouse, America." ( The Washington Post)
“a spirited, head-spinning entertainment from a writer of undeniable genius.” ( Publishers Weekly)

Highly recommended! In his usual dazzling style, Rushdie writes... Audible should have more of his captivating works. Midnight's Children, The Moor's Last Sigh and of course, the controversial '..Verses'

Great Listen, more please.

This book is a classic, and the audio edit leaves out a major plot elements which make sense of the whole thing. Aside from that, it's well presented. But it's not Rushdie's book, it's a readers digest condensed version.

This would be a fabulous listen if only it were available as Unabridged. I was very disappointed it is only offered as abridged. The story doesn not work as abridged.

Please give us the Unabridged!
