About this listen

A golden statue comes to life and, with the help of a reluctant swallow, gives away everything he has. A fierce giant forbids children to play in his garden -- then realizes that only through sharing will spring ever come again.

In these rich fables by Oscar Wilde, author of The Importance of Being Earnest, characters learn that kindness and giving are the greatest powers of all.

Oscar Wilde paints with words

If you could sum up The Happy Prince and Other Tales in three words, what would they be?

well written fables

Who was your favorite character and why?

the swallow was my favorite character

What does Stephen McLaughlin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

inflection by this narrator give a good idea of how Oscar Wilde wanted his stories to sound

Any additional comments?

I liked this book of short stories because it gave pause to think about the beauty that creates a place in the imagination and to consider the moral of the story. Oscar Wilde brilliantly wrote with a political or religious thought but painted it as beautiful little story. I am now a fan of Oscar Wilde's books.
