About this listen

A spine-chilling winter ghost story set in the months after the Great War. Perfect for lovers of MR James and Susan Hill.

The War is over, but for petty criminal Charlie his darkest days are only just beginning. Charlie Briggs is never off-duty, even when a botched job means he's forced to lay low in a sleepy Hampshire town for the holiday season. Always searching for his next unwitting victim, or a shiny trinket he can pilfer, he can't believe his luck when he happens upon a rare book so valuable it will set him up for life. All he needs to do is sit tight until Boxing Day. But there's a desperate story that bleeds beyond the pages; something far more dangerous than London's mobsters is lurking in the shadows.

Could the book be cursed? Why is he haunted by the horrors of war? Can he put things right before he's suffocated by his own greed?

i like the narrator's tone of voice that goes perfectly with this book.

Too short. The haunting Poppies could have been a bit longer. But overall, it is excellent.

The Haunting of the Reprehensible Charlie

The Haunting Scent of Poppies by Victoria Williamson is a ghost story set during the winter, around Christmas. The main character, Charlie, is a renowned burglar the police seem to be after for robbing bookstores and pickpocketing rings, diamonds, watches, wallets, cigarette cases, and more. He tried to steal and sell anything he could. This time, he had stolen a critical book, "The Art of War, given to Arthur Richards on his 18th birthday. Arthur was dead and buried before he was 20 years old. Once Charlie stole the book from the bookstore, he began to have trouble with dreams and bad things happening. Arthur, who had died in a burning, haunted Charlie. The story takes you through dramatic, haunting episodes involving Charlie. The story is mesmerizing, unpredictable, and quite enjoyable. Read this book to find out what happened to Charlie. It is a ghost story that you will enjoy. I recommend this book for pure enjoyment.
