They settled near friends, walking distance from the sugar sands and blue waters of Naples, Florida. A wedding, a child on the way, their lives finally settling into a comfortable predictability. Bliss, only blocks from the Gulf Coast she loves. Then, her friend dies. Karen fights her organization’s desire for speedy, uncomplicated answers. She struggles to fit into her new work environment, knowing that a sharp, public departure from departmental orthodoxy could cause her to be ostracized, or worse. All the while she is consumed with doubts about her fitness as an expectant mother. Her sheriff’s department renders its sad verdict about her buddy – suicide - and she returns to her cubicle, awaiting the birth of her first child. A phone call interrupts the mind-numbing, mundane office work. Her friend’s widow extends an invitation to coffee.
