About this listen

The spellbinding, suspenseful story of how Merlin, the Enchanter, helped Arthur become the king of all Britain - a magnificent novel set in a time when no life is safe, no law stable.

Keeping watch over the young Arthur Pendragon, the prince and prophet Merlin Ambrosius is haunted by dreams of the magical sword Caliburn, which has been hidden for centuries. When Uther Pendragon is killed in battle, the time of destiny is at hand, and Arthur must claim the fabled sword to become the true High King of Britain.

The prophetic voice of Merlin communicates not only the bristling atmosphere of the story's ancient setting, but also its profound relevance to our own time. Once again, as she did in her best-selling The Crystal Cave, Mary Stewart provides a glowing recreation of pre-Camelot England.

Amazing book

I’m not sure what makes it so special but the Mary Stewart books ring so true of history, imagination and beauty. The narrator does a masterful job. Truly a treasured book .

The Hollow Hills in an unabridged form at last!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Hollow Hills to be better than the print version?

The narrator did an excellent job of brining this wonderful story to life. I can't say that it is better than the book, because it perfectly matches the book. But it is a terrific way to go to 5th century Britain while walking, driving or working.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I wanted to take in the whole story. And I wanted it to last. I have been waiting for years for the unabridged version. I have been checking back every couple of months just in case Audible got an unabridged version. And now I have the three books of the Arthurian Saga.

Any additional comments?

This is a terrific take on the legend of King Arthur. Mary Stewart tells the story from Merlin's point of view. She does a great job of taking us back to 5th century Britain. She gives Merlin the right amount and type of power. She ties together the legends of Ambrosius, Uther and Arthur in a way that makes sense. She makes her characters human. This whole saga is very enjoyable. And the narration is very well done as well.

amazing book - best narration ever!

this book is wonderful but Derek Perkins narration brings Merlin's character to life. I didn't think I would get into, yet another retelling on Merlin and King Arthur and yet I finished this book in 2 days. Frankly, I'm exhausted since I listened into the wee hours of the morning. I can't wait to listen to the next installment in the series but am also weary because legend says that Merlin will be betrayed. :(

Cool reimagining of King Arthur

I really dig this book. So many of Arthurian tales rehash the same. ole story with no surprises. Mary Stewart changes it up enough to keep the reader guessing. The narrator is awesome as well.

I read this series when it came out 50 years ago…

… and I still listen to it regularly on my phone. The Crystal Cave is great, but this one is by far my favorite.

The Hollow Hills, and the Wicked Day finish the story, but again, this one is my favorite.

I agree that the narrator could NOT be better.

Suffice it to say, this series is the only one that has stood the test of time and it still apart of my daily life.

It connects to the knowing in my heart, that the calling God put in us, manifests as a child and doesn’t leave us all the days of our life.

Wonderful Sequel to The Crystal Cave

This is a "re-reader", a book I've enjoyed more than once. I've always loved the Arthurian legends, and Mary Stewart whisks us into the mists of time with her 3 book series. I tend to devour these, non-stop, as if they were bags of crisps. Character development is so well done that each person comes alive. It is Merlin who tells and who drives the story. Rest up before you start reading as you'll find it hard to put down. Enjoy!
