About this listen

"To inherit a great fortune. To inherit a great misfortune." These words, from Nathaniel Hawthorne's notebook, neatly encapsulate the theme of The House of the Seven Gables - that of a family whose fortunes are poisoned by its past misdeeds. The sins of the Pyncheon father are visited upon his children over a period of several generations, until such time as one of his descendants unites with a member of the family he has wronged. Love conquers hate, and new blood washes away the original crime. This intriguing and insightful novel truly deserves its significant place in the canon of American literature.

A Lovely Classic

The House of Seven Gables is one of my favorite books. I’ve read the unabridged version and was immediately sucked in. I recently went to the house itself in Salem, MA and wanted to revisit the story via audiobook. I sampled all of the many narrations but selected this one because Peter Marinker sounds a lot like Vincent Price, whom I love. I wasn’t too upset that this version is abridged because Hawthorne’s book is almost tedious in its length, although his prose is so beautiful it’s forgivable. This adaptation still captures the lovely flavor of his writing and all of the important plot points. He does a marvelous job with all of the different characters, it’s just a delightful performance all around. A great way to experience this classic tale. Give it a listen (then go see the house!)

A delightful retelling

The narrator starts with the perfect timber of voice for this Hawthorne work. Yet inexplicably begins depicting character parts with an absurd falsetto renditioning of several of the characters. Subsequently destroying the narrative and mood. Don't waste your time or love of Hawthorne on this narration.

Opens well. Yet collapsed miserably.

It seemed that this recording is an abbreviated version in 3 chapters. I was not pleased. Remove the book from my selections.
