About this listen
Mark wrote his gospel for the Christian community in Rome which was suffering greatly; they had lost both Peter and Paul as well as many others due to the persecutions under Nero. The community was badly shaken in its faith by the passing of the first generation of believers, so Mark set out to console, comfort and encourage his listeners. He did so by setting forth the perfect humanity and the perfect divinity of Jesus in the midst of suffering, following everything he had received from Peter and from Paul.
If we have difficulty today perceiving the divinity of Jesus, this has to do with the way its presented as marked by humility, which may not seem compatible with the glory of deity. To contemplate Christ is not to fix our eyes on his visible humanity, but to focus our inner gaze on his divinity, in such a way that it shines through his full humanity. This meditation on the Gospel of Mark by Daniel Bourguet consists of two volumes of studies on episodes in the life of Jesus.
