About this listen

In "The Infallible Godahl", published in 1914, a criminal uses one of Armiston's mystery stories as the blueprint for a real-life crime.

Frederick Irving Anderson (1877-1947) was an American journalist and short story writer, born in Illinois. He wrote many short stories for magazines. He also published two books on farming and only three works of fiction during his lifetime, leaving most of his stories uncollected in magazines. Godahl: Right Story, Wrong Voice

"The Infallible Godahl" remains a standout in early American detective literature, but its latest audiobook adaptation is a letdown. Cecelia Warburn's narration, while earnest, fails to capture the period charm and complexity of the characters. Her inexperience as a narrator is evident and results in a disconnected listening experience.

Fans of a near-perfect audiobook version from the late '90s will find this rendition particularly disappointing. For those looking for this infinitely superior version look no further than David Birney's narration found in Chapter 4 of the audiobook,"More of The Greatest Mysteries of All Time" available on Audible. The new choice of narrator seems misjudged, turning what could have been a thrilling experience into something flat and uninspiring. The audiobook lacks the richness and immersive quality of its predecessors, and those new to the story may be better served by reading the original text or seeking out earlier audio editions.

In conclusion, this adaptation of "The Infallible Godahl" is a missed opportunity, as the choice of narrator doesn't do justice to the timeless narrative. Audible's decision to opt for a newer version rather than republishing the esteemed '90s recording leaves much to be desired."
