About this listen

In The Infernal Promise, a humble wagon train filled with immigrants headed for San Francisco suddenly finds itself lost in a faraway world, caught in the middle of a planetary invasion where animals walk and talk like people. The travelers face battle axes and power staffs, with hostile giants on four-legs and two, eager for their death.

However, this is not your typical wagon train. It includes assassins posing as missionary nuns, a Filipino gambler armed with a Bowie knife and rattan fighting baton, two Chinese brothers leaving their lives as fighters for the prosperity of a land called Gold Mountain and Japanese adventurers looking to make America their home.

2 Japanese brothers begin their travels in the mid-1800s with the gathered immigrants along on their wagon train, trekking for San Francisco.
They are detoured through another dimension to the Empire of the Caramon, a chimera race preparing for an insurrection among themselves and a war with alien enemies as the human travelers argue returning some way home or joining the Caramon in their violent conflicts.

The genre stew of sci-fi, action-adventure and fantasy by Ronald Brown.

Phenomenal pacing from start to epilogue. Any pause in action brings understanding to our band of immigrants, their allies and enemies, or the world they stumbled into-- resulting in a solid execution of multi-layered characters in a land with a full history and ripe with a variety of creatures, cultures, and intentions. In a lot of ways, it reads like a real immigrantion story through a fantastical filter.

Infernal Promise isn't brain candy, as it's a deeper read than the term usually implies. However, I'm inclined to say it's like good dark chocolate. Rich with all the notes and undertones you want, intense while simultaneously smooth, and impossible to put down without helping yourself to another piece first.

I made the mistake of listening while weightlifting, and let's just say the first bout of action seized my attention so intensely that my arms were left limp the next day. 10/10

Hands down one of my favorites this year!
