About this listen
There were stipulations to the inheritance. She had to live in her aunt’s house for a year. If she didn’t, she walked away with a small percentage of the estate. It would be easy. Wouldn’t it?
The old Victorian house was filled with secrets. As they begin to reveal themselves, Kat wonders if she ever really knew her aunt at all. Then the house begins to communicate through her journal, and a detective arrives at her door needing help to solve a murder.
Who really was her aunt? And, where does that leave Kat?

Narration: I understand that using a computer AI must be less expensive than hiring an actual person...but you need to at least hire a real person to listen to the results and edit where necessary. I found it amusing at first but then it just became annoying when the computer would use the wrong version of a word. A few examples are that the main character was expressing a comment about an injury, a "wound"... however the AI turned this into "wound", as if to wind a string up. Clutz became "clootz", the spice "cumin" was pronounced "come-in", and her dinner of "penne" was referred to as "pen". As a listener, all I have are words to paint a picture in my head... if the wrong pronunciation of words are used, it's just confusing and dis-jointed.
WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD
Storyline: The plot concept held so much promise but it was poorly executed. There was little build-up, little mystery...it as quite literally "someone was killed, the "spirit" journal told her who, she told the police, the guy was picked up". There was very little evidence and no official arrest of the suspect. He was questioned... and then labeled guilty without a confession of any kind. (more on this under Editing)
On the romance topic, it was also rushed.... she'd only had 2 dates with the love interested and told him up front she was only in the area for a year... however, after 2 dates he's already acting totally lovestruck and distraught when she mentioned she was worried about getting serious because, as she'd already told him, her stay in the area was short-term. He gives her the silent treatment, until she breaks down and calls him...which prompts a 3rd date, where they end up in bed. sigh. It's very poor writing to have your character be up front and honest with a love interested, only to be punished for it. Then to have her be the one to give in and call him just re-enforces his childish behavior and borderlines on gas-lighting as she felt she was in the wrong. There were so many times I felt my eyes rolling back in my head, I'm shocked they are there permanently.
There is very little back-story or set-up for our main character. There is no explanation as to why her aunt required her to stay there for a year... she mentions going back to her job in Riverside after the year is up, but there's no discussion about what that job is or what she does. The book continues to mention the one year term but never explains what might be holding her back from staying for more than a year. It's all very vague and repetitive.
Editing: There are several areas where the characters says the same thing over and over within a 3-minute span. An example is the 3rd date...where it's mentioned that it's only a 3rd date at least twice before he's even finished making the dinner. Additionally, other story elements are out of sequence... the notebook wrote "it was the grandson" before she'd ever talked to the police about anything... but then later explains why she wrote "it was the grandson" because she got the idea from the police! The storyline also mentions numerous times about how often she watches crime TV dramas...and knows how the system works... but then the actual system provided in the book is nothing like how the system works. Firstly, no police station is going to hire someone, no questions asked, simply because her aunt "helped" them solve crimes. Secondly, when the supposed murderer is revealed, the police openly say they don't have enough to arrest him on, yet they haul him in anyway... where they then invite her to listen to the interrogation! This is highly unlikely. During the interview, in which the suspect had a lawyer, there was no confession of the murder and no official charges applied to the suspect. The closest they got was that he "looked" guilty because he looked defeated at one point. I'm sorry... no matter what a persons facial expressions are... they are not a affirmation of guilt that will hold up in a court of law.
Seriously, avoid this book...and if you're the author, do better homework and fire your current editor. I am by no means an author and I think even I could do better than this.
Bad narration, bad storyline and bad editing!
