Publisher's summary

Wells weaves a story of scientific excess into a high-speed thriller. Montgomery, a brilliant but twisted biologist, is delivering exotic animals to his private island when he rescues a shipwrecked man. An act of compassion, or another addition to his collection?

Editorial reviews

H. G. Wells' gruesome tale of gene splicing and medical experimentation had an immediate effect on its 19th-century audience, bringing attention to the cruelty of vivisection and further developing the public’s emergent interest in animal rights. Performer Jonathan Kent’s clear, composed baritone provides a lucid delivery of this unabridged classic. Kent’s relaxed manner is punctured by the mounting shock and unease of scientist Edward Prendick, the story’s shipwrecked protagonist, as he unearths the ghastly nature of Dr. Moreau’s experiments. Likewise, each of Moreau’s craven "beastfolk" is imbued with a unique voice, indicative of their animal inner natures, and belying their traumatic experiences at the hands of the exiled scientist.

Poor narration

The narrator is ill suited to this book. He seems a bit unemotional and smug.

Classic of Science Fiction that's treated lovingly

I haven't listened to any other adaptations of this book, but I highly recommend this one by Jonathan Kent. I just love the way he says "Silly Ass"! His narration also really made the beast men come alive for me. The book itself is the wonderful book from H. G. Wells and it's amazing. Thanks for this production!

Great classic

It tells the story of an English explorer named Edward Prendick who survives a shipwreck and finds himself stranded on an uncharted island off the coast of West Africa. There he encounters a mad scientist, Dr. Moreau, who has been conducting large experiments on animals to create human-like beings by combining animal parts with those of humans.

Early example of science fiction

An early example of science fiction that dives into the ethics of research and the frailty of society.

Audio levels need to be balanced

Enjoyed the story and the narration but the audio levels were either too high or too low which required the volume to be turned up and down all the time which proved distracting.
