About this listen

In the 1950s, a British scientist is lost at sea. Once rescued, he finds himself on a mysterious island populated with strange, half-human, half animal creatures who are ruled over by a mysterious scientist and his assistant.

This new full-cast audio adaptation of H. G. Wells' classic tale of the consequences of science without morality vividly re-creates the claustrophobic feel of the novel while bringing the setting forward to the fear and anxiety of the Atomic Age.

Critic reviews

“Mondello Publishing provides an updated adaptation of H. G. Wells’s classic novel, positioning the story in the 1950s and in the context of genetic mutation and nuclear power. Through uncontrollable events, Edward Prendick finds himself on an unmarked island with Montgomery, a scientist and aid to the notorious Dr. Moreau. Prendick soon discovers that the island’s wild-life is a bit more human than he’s comfortable with. The full cast of clear and distinctive voice actors includes Matthew Postner as Prendick, Nathalie Boltt as Montgomery, and Andrew McGinn as Moreau. Other actors fill in for secondary characters and humanoid animals, which the production captures well, providing each character with strong vocal cues to help the listener understand what kind of animal it is. The background music and sound effects further enhance the mood and tone of the production.” ( BookLife)
"With sniffling, gurgling, growling delight, Matthew Posner and the other cast members tell Edward Prendick's story of being shipwrecked on an island where a scientist has been experimenting on animals, turning them into human-animal hybrids….The sound effects team perfectly re-creates the sounds of a tropical island and all its animal and avian inhabitants." A slightly better updated version

There was much promise with this one. Altering the outdated original to the nuclear age and is using a cast was a good idea. But... the rather thin plot felt over-dramatized. Edward yelling astonishment or anger every 5 minutes got old. And if you're keep the gunfire, and gonna make Montgomery the hot female doc, then her and Edward need to have hot anamslistic sex. Otherwise, it's a PG-13 story. So, there it is. A rather thin effort.

Excellent version of this story!

Great cast of narrators for this story. I haven't heard or read this since I was a kid. I loved it! my only complaint is that I wish Wells would have made it longer or made it into a series.

Did not like the dramatized version

The story was unique for the time period I'm sure. Again might would have liked it more if I hadn't watched the movie first. Didn't enjoy the dramatized version of the audiobook it made the story a little less creepy and made me rolled my eyes often. I think the plot needed to be thicker just an ok read.
