About this listen

Tall, gangling schoolmaster Ichabod Crane, both educated and highly superstitious, comes to live and teach in the quiet, rural town known as Sleepy Hollow in the Catskill Mountains of New York. There, he falls in love with the daughter of wealthy farmer Van Tassel. But he must compete with the much admired, waggish ruffian Brom Bones, whom he encounters - with absolute terror and belief - in the guise of the much storied and feared specter... The Headless Horseman.

Editorial reviews

In Washington Irving's classic ghost tale first published in 1820, the superstitious schoolmaster Ichabod Crane moves to small, isolated, and haunted Sleepy Hollow, where he competes with a local ruffian for the hand of Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a wealthy farmer. Until, one night, riding alone, Crane encounters a cloaked rider whose head is not on his shoulders, but in his saddle - the feared specter of the Headless Horseman. Renowned Shakespearean actor David Ian Davies brings ample suspense to this nuanced performance which is sure to leave listeners with goose bumps.

Love this old and captivating Halloween story.
Most memorable moment was the romantic. clear description of the countryside in which the characters reside, VERY atmospheric. Besides the occasional, high pitch to ending of his sentences (unnecessary) the narrator was pleasant enough to listen to and he told a good story.

A little old-fashioned but overall a good listen.

This is a story that most of us were told as children. I remember watching the disney cartoon version as a kid and it stays pretty true to the story.Ichabod Crane is described so well that you can see him in all his awkward glory. You can hear the horseman's hoof beats on his trail and it is a great short listen.

Even better than the disney version.

I've seen many movies and many adaptations of this story however I never knew the truth until now. From Disney in the 1950 through today everyone has put a spin on this story and now I can see why they have so much fun with it. This story goes beyond simply a ghost story. It's a love story that has a predictable ending when concerning people willing to do whatever they can to win the love they think they deserve. Read this story if you want to know the truth.

Finally the truth

A great piece of literature that was first introduced to me a young child, this story certainly withstands the test of time. I loved it back then as a short story and still enjoy it now as a much older adult... No doubt it, this story has been around for years and will remain to be around for years to come. As for the narration, this narrator does a great job and his graspy voice is perfect for this ghostly reading.

This is not the Disney short. It is narrated quit well while not being "performed". The tail is a classic for a reason. I needed to concentrate a bit more than normal in order to follow the story. I haven't checked out any of the performed versions. And if you are listening in a car full of kids you may want to consider a different version.

I greatly enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The narration was very good. This story is one of the all time classics and is a great listen for those who enjoy these type of stories during the month of October.

A Classic

A famous short story, part of a larger work, The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. The narration sounded very amateurish. Even the small print read at the beginning was read as though the narrator was trying to make it sound interesting. I recommend purchasing the version narrated by Anthony Heald.

A classic poorly read
