The Lifted Veil is a novella by George Eliot, first published in 1859.
Quite unlike the realistic fiction for which Eliot is best known, The Lifted Veil explores themes of extrasensory perception, the essence of physical life, possible life after death, and the power of fate.
This book has been carefully adapted into modern English to allow for easy listening.
Enjoy!

The story is really well written and held my attention strongly. There was just enough detail to draw me in without giving too much. Intriguing characters.
The narration was very good, the delivery did a great job of conveying emotions and had a natural flow.

It is effectively split into two major parts, the first being the characters history and what he knows and believes about his powers and the second half being the story of his relationship with his dead brother's wife, Bertha. Both parts work together to build an interesting and suspenseful tale.
Originally released in 1859 this is one of the early supernatural thrillers, and in that context is is a very interesting story. It has aged reasonably well, even when much of the style has been built upon and used ad naseum now.
Even with the adaption for the modern reader that has been applied it still has an old timey feeling in the writing. The words may have been updated by the style is still mid-19th century.
Narration by Michael T Downey is pretty good. Easy to listen to, well paced, and engaging with the story he does good work. The production quality leaves something to be desired, with some noises etc heard occasionally, but nothing too distracting.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

This story was a little bit fantastical, and didn't grip me right out of the gate, but I was hooked and fascinated about 20 minutes in.
The production quality could have been a little bit higher but the narrator was easy to listen to, and he told the story well.
