About this listen

Tommy, the Wilson slave, is injured as he daydreams about the beautiful woman he met at Sunday Sermon the previous day. Facing the loss of his arm, his master calls upon a slave doctor and her beautiful nurse to heal him. Turmoil erupts in the otherwise simple 1850 Missouri farming community and murder becomes the focal point of their lives. Risking everything they have worked so hard to achieve, the doctor and nurse find the meaning of true love and human compassion. The question is: who is healing who in their shattered lives?

Based on the author's research in slave narratives, The Lilac Nurse brings to life the suffering of slaves, freemen, and their white counterparts. Slave and slave owners are investigated in this unusual novel of murder, and destruction and rebuilding of human lives. The slave doctors and nurses of the time greatly contributed to the success of medicine.

Jeff Nebeker-Johnson is a full-time physician in Salt Lake City, Utah. He specializes in lower extremity disorders and diabetic wound care. A former medical researcher, he now spends his free time researching slave narratives and performing genealogy for Missouri slaves and their descendants. At the time of this writing he has completed genealogy work for over 10,000 former and enslaved African-Americans. He maintains an Instagram account called @slave_stories.

The story took a few unexpected twists and turns towards the end. I listened with my teenage son. I really enjoyed it. I would recommend it.
