About this listen

For over 400 years, the mystery of Roanoke’s “Lost Colony” has puzzled historians and spawned conspiracies - until now. New discoveries link the lost colony of Roanoke to Hatteras Island.

The legend of the Lost Colony has been captivating imaginations for nearly a century. When they left Roanoke Island, where did they go? What is the meaning of the mysterious word Croatoan? In the 16th century, Croatoan was the name of an island to the south now known as Hatteras. Scholars have long considered the island as one of the colonists’ possible destinations, but only recently has anyone set out to prove it. Archaeologists from the University of Bristol, working with local residents through the Croatoan Archaeological Society, have uncovered tantalizing clues to the fate of the colony.

Hatteras native and amateur archaeologist Scott Dawson compiles what scholars know about the Lost Colony along with what scholars have found beneath the soil of Hatteras.

A great contribution to American history

Very well researched and presented. It is long overdue to hear the real story of what happened so long ago.

Correcting Historical Errors!

I really appreciate hearing the evidence this book presents. I believe and always have believed that the colony joined the Native Americans that helped them survive. I'm so thankful this book is now an audiobook that can be listened to as I work.

Seems to solve it for me

A thoughtful examination of primary sources combined with summaries of recent archeological discoveries that only seems to reinforce the most straightforward solution to the question of where the Roanoke colonists went in the late sixteenth century. I’m more than convinced this colony is no longer “lost.” In fact I’d agree it was never truly lost to begin with.

disappointing

Sad that a history book would be written with animosity toward its subject. At times the writers accusations of hatred and racism toward early English settlers could easily be interpreted as hatred and racism. I easily recognize greed and national enterprise in the colonization of America, but listening to this book, one could easily believe that the English came to America primarily to kill the inhabitants. The historical recounting and theory of the lost colony is accurate and well documented, the socialist version of American history notwithstanding.

The "Lost Colony" was never lost, but was rediscov

Excellent book. Well written, wonderfully read. Had the colony not been abandoned American history would be very different. Remember the Croatoan, and their English allies, even if most choose to forget or ignore them.
