Fairly Good Story and Characters

I drive for work and only listen to books so having a good narrator is important. This is the first and last book I will listen to that has a computer generated narrator. No emotion or difference in tone for male or female characters is like listening to a boring professor in school.

Virtual voice

The story is great. Believe it or not, the virtual voice is not half bad. First time I’ve listened all the way thru a virtual. Voice. Book. The storyline carries it. Thru.

The ending ruined it for me.

In the final chapter Nick Randall was knifed in the stomach, shot in the leg, had the stuffing beat out of him, and no one seemed to notice. Other characters were wounded and medical attention was sought for them. Why not Dr. Randall? A stomach wound and gunshot wound are serious occurrences. The good doctor was in a lot of pain and bleeding. Why did no one tell him that he needed to be looked at? Why didn't Nick speak up?

All through this novel people could have revealed their situations and saved themselves a lot of grief. If this were a real book and not audio I would have thrown it at a wall but I didn't want to break my iPod. Grrr!

Enough with the cliches. "And if I don't?", "That's impossible!", "Are you kidding?", are some of the many in this book. It is very annoying to hear them, not once but many times!

The story was OK, mildly amusing. I'm listening to his next book now but if there are too many annoyances I will move on to other authors.

The mechanical reader.

I enjoyed the storyline and the different characters but I really did not like the computerized reader. It sounded lifeless and emotionless. 'Barking orders' was rather like just normal sp÷eaking and there were no voice differentials between characters. Male or female.

narration

the robotic narration loses some of the story. It is missing the natural warmth of a voice that changes inflection.

AI narration is soulless

The story was good and the book could’ve been very good, but the narration was terrible. AI doesn’t understand human emotions. Please get real people to narrate.

AI generated voice leaves a lot to be desired.

The story was ok but the AI narration was very distracting. It took a lot away from the overall experience.

It could be a good story but the narration is so bad that I couldn't finish.

No character development, humor, or anything interesting happening.

The title of this review says it all. I bought this book because it was on sale and had decent ratings. It’s also a genre I usually enjoy. I’m wondering if the reviews I read were for the same book. If I was reading this book instead of listening; I would have stopped after the first few chapters. Since I’m doing other things while listening to audio books I decided to see if it could possibly get any worse. Let’s just say it never got better. Sometimes I think it might be a generational thing. I’ve read some excellent books in my life so maybe my standards are just too high.
