About this listen
Drawing on a wealth of eyewitness accounts, contemporary reports, and declassified intelligence documents, some never published before, The Mafia at War reconstructs the relationships between the Mafia and Allied intelligence organizations.
Discover how Jewish gangsters clashed with Nazis on the streets of New York; how Mafiosi nearly issued contracts to kill top Nazis, including Hitler; how Mafia-backed bandits conducted a guerrilla war for Sicilian independence; and how Eisenhower was happy to arm the Mafia during the Allied invasion of Sicily.
Uncovering the extraordinary secrets of this collaboration, Newark provides crucial insight into both the history of World War II and how the Mafia came to dominate global crime in the post-war world.

Story
John Gotti was without a doubt the flashiest and most feared Mafioso in American history. He became the boss of the Gambino Crime Family in spectacular fashion—with the brazen and very public murder of Paul Castellano in front of Sparks Steakhouse in midtown Manhattan in 1985. Not one to stay below law enforcement’s radar, Gotti instead became the first celebrity crime boss. His penchant for eye-catching apparel earned him the nickname “The Dapper Don;” his ability to beat criminal charges led to another: “The Teflon Don.”

Story
In the fall of 1941, a momentous trial was set to begin that threatened to end the careers and lives of New York’s most brutal mob kingpins. The lead witness, Abe Reles, had been a trusted executioner for Murder, Inc., the enforcement arm of a coast-to-coast mob network known as the Syndicate. But the man responsible for coolly silencing hundreds of informants was about to become the most talkative snitch of all. In exchange for police protection, Reles was prepared to rat out his murderous friends, from Albert Anastasia to Bugsy Siegel....

Chicago was the worldwide leader in gangster wars and bootlegging in the 1920s, as Al Capone set the stage for his tremendous success and popularity. As a cop, Ron Previte was corrupt. As a mobster, he was brutal. And in his final role, as a confidential informant to the FBI, Previte was deadly. The Last Gangster is his story—the story of the last days of the Philadelphia Mob, and of the clash of generations that brought it down once and for all. Convinced that the honor of the "business" was gone, he became the FBI's secret weapon in an intense and highly personalized war on the Philadelphia mob, operating with the same guile, wit, and stone-cold bravado that had made him a force in the underworld.

Story
Frank Sheeran, known as the Irishman, waited his entire life to tell his story, or at least his version of his story. The world knew him as a union official, a longtime member of the Teamsters Union; he was a member of Jimmy Hoffa's inner circle at the top of the national union. As an old man suffering from cancer, Frank Sheeran shared his story with his attorney. He told him of the things that were already known, but he shared much, much more. This book explores Sheeran's confessions as a lifelong criminal with ties to some of the biggest crimes of the 20th century.

Story
Joe Barboza knew that there were two requirements for getting inducted into the Mafia. You had to be Sicilian. And you had to commit a contract killing. The New Bedford-born mobster was a proud Portuguese, not Sicilian, but his dream to be part of La Cosa Nostra proved so strong that he thought he could create a loophole. Barboza’s legacy, buried for years thanks to the murders or deaths of its participants, is finally coming to light and being told in its unvarnished brutality by one of America’s most respected true crime writers.

And why do they continue to have such a strong hold on our imagination, centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire?

Interesting and Insightful Book
I picked this book up as recently I was reading a number of Mafia books and I've already read a ton of WWII books -- so it seemed like a good match.
Overall the book is well presented, moves along at a good pace and covers the subject matter as promised. I was familiar with how the US government worked with the Mafia during the war so that wasn't shocking at all -- but this book covers in greater detail the question of if the government also used the Mafia to its advantage in Sicily. I won't give away the conclusion but I will say I wasn't surprised at all by the conclusions the author drew based on my previous knowledge of the war in Europe.
As for the book itself I felt for the most part it was good, there were spells however where I lost interest for a few minutes here and there but that wasn't a big issue and those spells generally only lasted a few minutes before the author was on to something new.
The factual side of the book seems to be in order and it seems to be well researched, additionally the author doesn't seem to be pushing an agenda or making shocking claims -- something most mob books are guilty of doing. The author probably could have sold a lot more books by passing along rumors or legends as facts but thankfully, for those that respect history, he doesn't ever do so.
The reader does a good job and is appropriate for the book.
Overall if you have an interest in the subject at hand -- and you're not looking for shocking claims that have no basis in truth -- you should pick-up this book.

unable to finish
something about the way the narrator spoke, drawing out the last word of every single sentence drove me absalutly craaazzzeeeey. poor example. but listen to the sample and you will see. I thought if I turned up the speed it would help ......no luuuuuuuck.
I went in thinking it had two of my favorite categories ( True Mob/War stories) but it jumped around so often that I just couldn't finish it. I hope this helps you. you might enjoy it but, I would save your time, credits or money and move on to another book.
