About this listen
Stanley is almost fifty. He hates his job, has an overbearing mother, and is in a failed relationship. Then he meets Asher, the man of his dreams, literally in his dreams.
Asher is young, captivating, and confident about his future—everything Stanley is not. So, Asher gives Stan a gift. The chance to be an extra five years younger each time they meet.
Some of their adventures are whimsical. A few are challenging. Others are totally surreal. All are designed to bring Stan closer to the moment his joyful childhood turned to tears.
But when they fall in love, Stan knows he can’t live in Asher’s dreamworld. Yet he is haunted by Asher’s invitation to “slip into eternal sleep.”

The author masterfully builds suspense, gradually peeling back layers of the protagonist’s past and the midnight entity that haunts them. This atmospheric setup is enhanced by vivid descriptions that make each eerie scene leap off the page, immersing readers fully in the chilling world of The Midnight Man.
The characters are well-drawn and relatable, each bringing a unique dimension to the narrative. The protagonist’s internal struggle and determination create an emotional depth that grounds the supernatural elements, making the stakes feel real and intense. Meanwhile, supporting characters add complexity and nuance, often leaving readers wondering who can truly be trusted.
For audiobook listeners, the narration amplifies the suspense, making the tense moments even more palpable. The narrator’s tone and pacing perfectly complement the story's dark, eerie vibe, capturing every gasp, pause, and whisper with precision.

The author, Kevin Klehr, crafts a multi-layer tale filled with suspense, sex, plot twists, more sex, and internal struggles. Each character is intentionally developed allowing for the plot twists to accurately reflect the emotional depth and supernatural pieces. The romance is very detailed and graphic.
The narrator, Laurence Stirling Knott, gives a solid performance smoothly slipping into each character flawlessly and projecting an accurate emotional response. He provides a unique voice for each allowing the audience to follow a complex narrative easily.
While the book has a strong storyline, the graphic sexual content felt excessive and, for me, detracted from the plot.
There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.
