Mina Murray series

Very good but a bit unbelievable considering the era it was written. Women just were not as depicted then. And men were not as weak. But all in all it was well developed story.

The best traditional vampire tale I've encountered

A mesmerizing tale of monsters and those who stand against them. Though characters are taken from Bram Stoker's classic tale, the story is wonderfully original. The narrator chosen couldn't have been a more perfect fit. You could believe she was Mina Murray telling of her own adventures. The best traditional vampire tale I've encountered. I received a free review copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.

A wonderful re-take on the Dracula legend

I loved this story! It was creative and surprising, and lit up all my monster-hunting enthusiasm. I loved the characters and the adoption of Mina's point of view, all her trials and growth.
The narration was a bit disappointing, not nearly dramatic enough for the material. I switched to reading.

Simply great!

This is such a fantastic re-imagination of Dracula! The central plot is really well-done, the characters truly engaging and the writing enthralling (no pun intended :P )

Once I began to listen, I only stopped to sleep, I simply couldn't stop listening. I adore Mina, she is one of those characters that have a perfect mix of strength and vulnerability. She's utterly human and easy to understand. But I also really like the whole bunch of characters, those who were there from the beginning and those that join along the journey.

There is a lot of suspense, some shocking reveals and even a bit of romance and a great ending... which, even as it works really well as a final stop, I really hope it isn't. I'm not even close to done with this characters :D

The job done by Danielle Cohen with the narration is truly great.

Traditional Gothic horror with Gaslamp twist

Beast of London
This book starts off with a stuffy Victorian feel but quickly morphs into something far more exciting. The POV character, Mina, was raised outside of traditional society and although she wears its trappings well and is engaged to a wonderful man of society whom she truly loves, she is not sure this is the life she is suited for. As with many of these books, she is written as a woman far ahead of her time.

When her past come barreling back into her life, Mina finds herself on a life-altering adventure with elements of Dracula, Van Helsing, lycanthopic legends, Jack the Ripper and even a bit of The Beagle and Mr. Flycatcher. The book maintained a theme though out of finding scientific explanations for the fantastic. Lots of action, and danger including violence and bloodshed.

Fortress of Blood
In many ways this was the second half of The Beast of London. That book set the stage and opened the mysteries. This book followed events as Mina and company worked to save Jonathan. The huge reveal at the end of book one was explored as Mina learned first hand more about the vampire threat they are facing and bonds with allies were forged.

There was quite a bit of action, but many of the battles in this book were internal and interpersonal and as a result the book became more introspective and moody at times. A different aspect of the vampires was being explored. The ending was well written and satisfying. I really liked the way it wrapped back to some of the opening scenes from book 1 and provided closure to not only to Jonathan's situation but other events left hanging in London.

Realm of Night
In defeating one enemy, were they only strengthening another? Mina, Abe, and associates are tackling their fiercest enemy yet and they will all be changed for the encounter. Some more than others. This book delves into the darker psychological elements introduced in book 2. They discover a secret weapon in the fight, but using it comes with great risk.

The characters on this team have grown on me over the course of this series. At times infuriating and others endearing. For how introspective they can be I wish some of them would think a little before diving into action (Mina, I'm looking at you!) but I suppose that impulsiveness adds to the drama and intrigue.
