About this listen

There were not less than seven people at the fashionable estate in Essex, England, who might have abided Emily Inglethorp if she were more dead than alive. There were not less than seven motives and no fewer than seven apparently fool-proof alibis when the wealthy lady of Styles lay dead in her own bed. Had the perfect crime been committed?

Here is the famous first case that launched the legendary career of Hercule Poirot. Agatha Christie's brilliant and eccentric detective steps out of retirement and into the shadows of a classic mystery. The victim is a wealthy heiress. The suspects are her fortune-hunting husband, her jealous relatives, her hired companion, and others. The solution is a deadly scheme that can only be revealed by the master detective himself, Hercule Poirot.

Sections Duplicated

Large portions of the book were duplicated making the story tedious. Cannot recommend this book.

Good story but recording has problems

The recording isn’t edited well and occasionally will back up and repeat a section. Toward the end there is a big part that gets repeated.

great story, but audio issues persist

in a couple of places, memorably chapter 12, the book skips back and repeats. quite annoying. audio quality is just OK. Difficult to hear. otherwise, a great read.

Fascinating!

It was a good mystery. The pace was slow at first, but it picked up halfway through. The reader did a great job with the two different accents. It kept me guessing.

The first and maybe the best Agatha Christie novel

A complex and surprising crime novel. Being Agatha Christie-s first, she did not have time to fall into her routines yet. Characters are all interesting, the concept is still fresh.

Jumps

There were a few jumps backwards but I loved the narration and story so I wasn’t bothered.

Classic Agatha Christie

I love Agatha Christie mysteries and will listen to them over and over. This rendition sounds dated and is satisfactory but better versions out there.

Always love Agatha Christie but…

Good classic if dated story. Reader might be okay for Miss Marple but is NOT good for Poirot. All in all, this was disappointing.

Enjoyable, but with recording issues

I really liked the story, but the recording leaves a lot to be desired. The whole thing, save for a couple sentences in the middle, sounds very muffled. I had to severely adjust my EQ just to be able to clearly make out what the reader was saying. There are also numerous places where it will jump back and repeat a passage. Usually just a sentence or two, but one towards the end was several minutes long. The reader herself is fine to listen to, I just wish it didn’t sound like it was coming through a pillow.
