About this listen

The existence of God is considered by many in the world today to be a fiction with little basis in what is generally deemed actual or real. Curiously, the multiplicity of metaphysical ideas, supernatural properties and mythological figures attached to the God hypothesis have never been and will never be synonymous with God. They were never intended to be so. People like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens have been right in dispelling many of these representations as pure nonsense. However, what they have dispelled is a literal view of God only – a view which no longer holds meaning for the vast majority and one that does not take into account the nuanced nature of the God hypothesis as understood and appreciated by many spiritual thinkers today. Instead, many of the ideas, properties and personages associated with the God hypothesis are essentially human constructions, representations and images created in order to better understand what is essentially beyond the human intellect and imagination – the Mystery at the heart of the Cosmos. Whether these representations are constructed by priests, philosophers or scientists, all fall short of their mark – to capture the Mystery intuited as real by human experience. "The Mysterious Case of God's Non-existence" re-contextualises a discussion of the nature of God, investigating this Mystery and identifying that while many representations of it in the form of God(s), supernatural consciousness or the divine are no longer helpful, behind their crumbling facade inheres a deeper truth toward which they are merely pointers or signposts.
