About this listen

One of Mark Twain’s classic tales, a small band of boys in a medieval village make friends with a very real angel whose name is Satan. He assures the boys that he’s not The Satan, but his nephew. He looks like a boy of their own age, but his magical powers and unusual perspectives on morals and mankind leave the boys amazed and bewildered.

Mark Twain never finished this story to his own satisfaction, after several attempts. In 1916, his biographer and friend Albert Bigelow Paine, with fellow author Frederick Duneka, added an evil astrologer and devised an ending, and published the version which is here presented. Considered by Mark Twain scholars to be a fraud due to the additions and changes, it is nevertheless a moving and satisfying story.

Narrated by Richard Henzel, who has been portraying Mark Twain on stage and screen for over 50 years.

Historical context aside, it's a good listen! Brings up a lot of tough questions that will stick with you.

there is some background chatter around chapter 8, which is a little spooky (especially in a book with a character named Satan) and the last chapter's audio quality bounces around a bit.

A good read

Mark Twains sharp, cutting, irreverent and creative commentary on religion is timeless and laugh-out-loud funny, and his observations are spot on. Give it a listen. It's 11 chapters of absolute gold.

This healed my religious trauma

One of Twain's greatest stories. To bad the narration is full of bad edits, horrible sound leveling, background noise and a extremely poor cadence.
I'm thinking of complaining directly to Amazon for a refund on this title.

Horrible recording

I have enjoyed this story for decades. He performer is a bit halting in his cadence but still very good.

Always a favorite I

The title says it all. I really liked the ending. I only wish I had someone to talk about it with. I'll puzzle over it by myself for a while.

Exceptional.

This simple quick book was incredible. Really makes you think. Satan is one of my favorite characters of all time now, as twisted as that may sound. What a story. Definitely give it a listen.

I would not have minded reading this in high school. This know why most people would not have wanted this to be read, but I think it would be better than most other books that influenced our young minds.
