Winter of 1853 in Willamette Valley After receiving devastating news, Galina is struggling on her own again. She now has a terrible secret and wonders how she will survive. Will she become a social outcast because of her mistakes? Laney Pritchett is just a small town girl who has a life of servitude and loneliness. When she hears about the opportunity to go West she prayerfully considers leaving her safe and lonely world behind. I realize my review title is a bit vague, but it does truly sum up my feelings about this book. I found all the side stories to be almost distracting and the main story didn't really feel like it reached closure. I want to like the book I felt something for some of the characters but I just wasn't a fan of the total piece. This felt like it should have been a series of books each about one of the story lines instead of one book of disjointed and somewhat unconnected storyline some of which were left dangling and incomplete.
